There's some 8" slim subs that would work, but I'd look into some DIY audio speakers, if you were looking to put some 8s in there. I'd get some 8 in woofers, but not subwoofers. Keep the subs in the main structure, not doors.[/QUOTE

You are right regarding woofers and not subwoofers.... I will admit I know zero about audio....I'm going to follow RichElliots lead and install CDT speakers in the front doors

Rich..CDT has the CL62 Pro on sale this month... Same as yours with the front stage tweeter...it seems like a no brainer as they are cheaper them the CL62 this month.....what's your thought?

Lou

Also, I originally had the tweeters mounted in the same spot where the OP did. I ended up moving them up to the A-pillar, about in the middle. I prefer the imaging in the A-pillar. Anyone installing tweeters might want to experiment with a couple locations first.

The CL62 Pro comes with tweeters for the doors and imaging tweeters that most are installing in the upper corners of the front windshield ..... So two tweeters and a 6.5 woofer off one channel

Lou

I think in general, this is the way to get better speakers in the 80. I wanted to go this route (and may at some later date) but I wanted to get rid of the factory speaker grill. I don't think an upholstery shop can redo the door skin because of the chrome/plastic piping down the middle.

I also think imaging would be better with the tweeters near the mids down in the pocket instead of at the top of the panel. Regardless, I'm sure the sound is far better than stock.

GO FOR IT! You will not regret the purchase! Just make sure you do a good job with the install...

What kind of amp. are you going to run?

Agreed. I wanted to get rid of the factory speaker grill too, but after much deliberation, decided it would not be worth it.

Disagree. Ideally you want the tweeters at ear level and pointed towards you. (It's easier said than done!)

I agree with the advice to experiment with different tweeter locations. I'm pretty happy with my setup and the way I got the tweeters to point back. While it doesnt look like it, this was one of the more challenging parts of the entire project.

CDT Audio also sells upstage imaging tweeters. They are designed to be used in conjunction with normal tweeters and provide improved sound imaging. I'm thinking about picking up a pair, which I would mount on the A-pillar.

Great job on these! I looked at your photos & write up before building my land cruiser speaker pods. My ideas were influenced by your ideas. Thanks for posting your original pics!

Your speaker pods turned out really nice! Good job!

I am currently in the process of refinishing my back door panels and installing a new headliner. I also bought enough material for the seats to be covered, hopefully I can get those done soon.

Rich...I'm running the same amp that you have and the entire truck has been soundproofed, roof, floor, and the doors are done inside and out with Dynamat, Fatmat and Second skin...
I need to remove the 3.5" speakers in the dash and roof and replace the Infinity components in the doors..... I found out that more speakers does not equal better sound unless you know what your doing and have the ability to really tune the system and I don't have that ability...so it leading me down the path of higher end components. I'm also running a 10" Shallow Mount Alpine in a enclosure.
There's a link in my signature to my truck

Absolutely! The imaging and staging can get real goofy with many speakers. Focus on getting quality components and properly installing and positioning them for the best sound quality. Adding more speakers doesn't even make it much louder.

I checked out your link.... that's a pretty cool truck you go there! I agreed with you about the need to have a properly tuned and balanced sound system. Luckily I have a friend who's very knowlegeable and experienced in this area and has helped me balance the system. We still have a little fine tuning to do.

How does that Shallow Mount 10" Alpine sub sound? Are you pretty happy with the sound? How much cubic feet of air space does that enclosure have? Originally I wanted to make an enclousre in the side like that, but it looked pretty tricky to do.

Rich

Rich, the enclosure was just under 1 cubic ft and the sub would not perform so I cut the ends and extended the box a bit and it seems to be working nice..... It was a PITA to build the box to fit.... The test comes this weekend...I'm going to slap together a larger box just to see the difference if Its better then I'll reconfigure that cargo area and build a larger box that will extend about I to 2 inch out ......my plan down the road is to install ARB cargo drawers in the rear so I know I can extend a box out a bit and not come close to the drawers ...so it maybe back to the drawing board for that nice side panel I made.... I'll keep you posted..
I am going to order the speakers

Yes, the A-pillar is ideal, but the 80 has space limitations. In addition, the A-pillar is closer to the driver than most other cars, thus compounding the problem.

There's no room in the A-pillar for proper imaging. I think a 1" tweeter is what I have, and as you can see there is very little room for swiveling/tilting. Even with swiveling/tilting, it would need to be swiveled/tilted 30 degrees or so. At that point, you're better off making a tweeter pod for them in the A-pillar.

The CDT speakers have this extra tweeter that mounts in the upper windshield corner which should solve the mounting issue. I'll still have to make door pods for the 6.5 woofers.

In my setup, I made spacers for the 6.5s using 3/4 in MDF. I sandwiched two of them together and glued for a total thickness of 1.5 in. These will accommodate just about any 6.5 in woofer. I cut the stock openings (not the vinyl) and stretched the vinyl over the spacer so they can't be seen. I'll get some pics of the final.

Door Pods

Rich, here'sa teaser of the door pods I'm working on...there's a few more in my build thread. Thanks again for the posting this and for the speaker recommendation..they have arrived!!!

I love it.... Seeing others put some real effort into great sounding stereos in our 80s. I've got so many hours in my 80s system I've lost track. Sounds like your system will be clear and tight. Never heard the CDT speaker line but construction looks top notch. For a first time glass job it looks great. I too am a novice but I was not willing to live with the possibility that I might remake them later to get them "right" so persistence and time lead to these:

My objectives were to cover the original speaker location, utilize the factory pocket, securely mount heavy speakers, prime staging, and durability. Combining MDF, fiberglass mat, resin, kitty hair, and LineX resulted in the above.
Probably have 40 hours easy just in these things but I could not be happier. Wouldn't change a thing. In fact Im about to start another set for my 93 Yota Pickup. Same style, same speakers going in. Boston Acoustics Pro Series 6.53
