One of my front speakers went all poppin and buzzin on me, so I wanna replace the set. Only problem is, seems that the mount depth is an issue. My 91 has about 1 1/4" of depth on the top, a little more on the bottom of the opening. Who has replaced their speakers recently, what did you replace them with and how many :banana:did you spend? I'm trying to stay on a budget. Thanks!

Oh yeah, am i seeing this right, front doors are 5" and rear doors are 4"?

i replaced mine a month ago with whatever ones everyone recommended...some tgsomething or another.

search is your friend;)

I have Polk 651 speakers in my doors, they are very good IMHO. They were on sale for ~$50, normally around $100 per set, at the time. Just did a google search, looks like they are currently $50 at Crutchfield, Amazon... They are actually shallower than the 5.25" Polk speakers.

I just barely installed some Infinitys. They are too deep to mount inside the door, so I put them outside on the door panel, ala southff4 (but no grill...).

It's not what one would call pretty, but they are much better than the Kenwoods I had before.

i put in some pioneer cheapo 6.5". if you search, theres a few threads that mention these as a good fit since you can use the oem grilles for a factory look. not quite plug and play, since the oems are 5.25 i think. i remember needing longer mounting screws, but no spacers were involved. i also disconnected the factory amp when i did the scion upgrade. with the new speakers and head unit, sounds much better.

6.5 will probably sound better. The difference between the polk 6.5 vs. polk 5.25 is much more significant than I thought it would be. I put 5.25 in the rear doors, but regretted it, after hearing the difference, as well as the fact that the 6.5 would have mounted the same (no more work/cutting) as the 5.25 speakers, due to the shallower depth of the 6.5 polks.

Were you able to leave the OEM grills? have a pic?

No, I couldn't figure a way to do it, and it wasn't that important to me. I did paint the grilles to match the interior though, it does not visually "stick out" as an aftermarket blingy speaker. No pics currently.

I have the same ones, they are awesome and very affordable. My advice is just surface mount them and forget using the factory grills. It makes the whole process easy and quick.

Cool - thanks for the links and the feedback! I was trying to figure out what depth and size I could use without having to mod the door. I think I'll go with the 6.5" on front and rear doors. Did the Polk 651s fit without a build up? $50 seems a good price per set and I'm not too concerned about using the factory grills but will if I can.

I used Polk 651 , not 651s for front and rear.
Front - they mounted using suplied ring and double folded speaker baffle (to lift some more mounting ring) form Crutchfield. I could use oryginal mounting holes. I had to trim panel to accomodate for larger speaker(which was easier then I thought with cardbord knife).
Rear for 651 requires enlarging opening in sheet metal and re-drilling holes. Double folderd speaker baffle and supplied ring makes solid anchor for speaker.
