Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread, just did my first and this was the most valuable reference.

Can someone give a good reason not to use moly grease throughout the birf & bearings? Especially considering types of greases shouldn't mix, yet inside the knuckle there is Moly around the bird and MP in the trunion bearings...

Also can someone give an account to rough quantity of grease used? In the OPs picture it shows 4 tubes on Mobile1 Synthetic and 1 of Redline CB2 Moly Grease. Yet I'd have assumed that there would be a LOT of moly needed in packing the birf and inside of the knuckle, while packing the wheel bearings doesn't really take a heck of a lot, in comparison, no?

Ive heard that moly grease isn't good to use on roller type bearings. It's too slippery to allow the bearing to actually roll and may develop a flat spot on the bearing. Moly grease is to be used when to metals rub together, like with birfs.

Here is the kit I ordered. What are the C clips that I am missing? See anything else I might need?

This is all great info. Planning on an axle rebuild in the near future.

You can just s*** can those OEM felt knuckle wipers and metal rings. Just put in a set of longfield wipers and you'll be good to go.

Bad design by Toyota. Just like a bunch of other stuff on these trucks.

There are 2 sets of c-clips:

1. 90520-31007: outer c-clips that go outside of the spindle and underneath the drive flange.

2. 90521-34005: inner hole snap rings that keep the birf attached to the axle shaft.

You can probably reuse the outer ones.

The inners either get damaged or destroyed when separating the birf from the axle shaft.

I am a total newbie to the Land Cruiser world and haven't done much work on any of my previous vehicles and am attempting a front axle rebuild this weekend mostly by myself (install will have help from a friend, I hope). So far everything has been very clear, but I have a few comments and questions on the instructions in the FAQ before I re-install everything tomorrow.

With the cone washers removed from the Flange, remove the Drive Plate. After the flange is removed you will need to use a snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring.

It looks like this is backward - I had to remove the snap ring before I could remove the drive plate.

Remove the oil seal set on the back of the knuckle.

There will be a metal retainer held on by 6 bolts.
Felt dust seal,
Rubber seal
Steel ring.
Note here the order they are installed and the direction of the ridge on the rubber seal when removing it.

Ok, I noted the direction of the ridge - toward the outside of the truck. See below for question/conflict.

Slide the wiper seal kit over the inner knuckle ready for seating. starting with closest to the center of the truck, the order is felt seal, rubber seal with ridge facing towards the differential, metal seal.

Ok, why did we have to note the direction of the rubber seal if you are going to tell us which direction it is supposed to be? And what if the old one was different than what you say here in the FAQ? I assume the FAQ is correct and I need to have the ridge pointing toward the center of the truck, at least that is what most of the other threads say. Any disputes?

Place a new Gasket in the position on the knuckle along with the bushing on the end of the axle and install the spindle.

The FAQ should mention the needle bearings in the newer spindles (my 93 has them in it). I am going to use the same as the wheel bearing grease for this, based on other posts. Anyone have directions for maintenance? I haven't found that yet.

Thank you!

So, is it recommended to switch the birfs side to side when doing this maintenance?
Thanks

Are you going to use marlin crawler hd seals or oem?

Just thinking of switching existing birfs: left to right and right to left...???

Regarding the birfs, it is recommended that you swap sides when rebuilding. I was referring to your inner axle seals.

Sorry Tp..
I misread.
I going with OEM from Cdan....
