I sometimes poke around at classified ads in Europe, and occasionally I see a car that looks better than most. I found this one this morning (when I should have been working).
1993 Left Hand Drive HZJ73, so mid wheelbase with 1HZ 6 cylinder n/a diesel, 5-speed, removable fiberglass top, and fold-down windshield. Looks like original paint and original interior. No photos in the ad of the motor, but they'd be easy to get.
The seller says all the right things:
"I am selling my HZJ 73 6 cylinder 4.2 l with 198,700 km certified, 2nd owner (my brother is 1st owner) in excellent condition Hard TOP body with folding windshield. It has been appraised twice with the following conclusion: very good general condition with all the original elements and preserved in near new condition. No corrosion, it was treated with DINITROL + injection of wax into all hollow bodies upon purchase. He has never gone off-road and has always been parked in a garage. Maintenance was done regularly."
Asking price is 25000 Euro, which is about US$27,000. Figure about another +/- $3-4k to get it from the seller's house to yours in the USA. If I were looking for a nice mid-wheelbase diesel 70-series, I'd want to take a closer look at this one before it's gone. I'd take a heat gun and remove the stickers, and lose a few of the accessories that aren't to my taste, but the bones of this one look to be very good. As always, not my car, no affiliation, and I haven't seen it in person. Ask questions and verify any assumptions prior to purchase.
If you don't think you're capable of importing a car, rest assured, you are (if I can do it, anyone can). I can connect you with a guy in Europe who can do the legwork for you and get it on a ship to the US if you want.
Some photos for posterity:
