you know I've been looking at the photos and the more I look the more I think ....

that'll buff right out ;)

can't believe i'm the first to notice

Dude. That sucks.
I'm glad to read that you and your dog made it through okay. I think that it is now time to build another Ultimate 80! Good luck with the insurance folks.

why'd you have to kick the windshield to get out?

Given the power is out, it's easier to replace the windshield than the moon roof (which is a positive sign that he did not have a concussion as that was pretty straight thinking :D )

Glad you and the dog walked afterwards, Beno!

Well, the 80 get pretty hung up on the highway today.
I walked away with a bump on the head and really bad headache.
I'm happy I'm alive.

Soo sorry to hear that. Glad you're OK.
Always admired your good natured approach to wrenching,
here's to something new (in time) to wrench on

I don't want to be an ass, but I am very curious. You now have a personal experience that could weigh in on another debate that you have touched on/entered into in the past.

You said before that you removed your ABS.

Was your CDL engaged?

Is your stance still the same on the CDL/ABS debate?

Well, i never really had a chance to step on the brakes really at all, except for a light tap right before hitting the snow bank.

CDL was not engaged as I was on regular blacktop/highway surface. Road conditions were fair.....of course, except for the spot that they did not plow.

What was interesting is that the officer was actually going to give me a citation. He checked with his sargeant and the officer on the scene really argued my case that it was DOT's fault for leaving such a large pile of snow like that in the fast lane--especially when all of the other lanes had been plowed clean as a whistle.

Yes, my stance is still the same. Me no likey ABS.

That is one of the reasons I drive the cruiser and not my Ford Ranger when it is very bad weather here in Mass. Glad to see the trucks will save your ass when the worst happens.

Hope you have a speedy recovery and enjoy the reserection.....

Onur, so sorry to here/see this. I saw the title of the thread on the main page and my heart dropped, when I opened the page and saw it was your 80, my heart dropped more.

You always seem to be willing to help, and it really sucks to see this happen to you.

I am curious though, why no insurance? Did you not have full coverage? or are you trying to avoid the rate hike? It might be in your best interests to reconsider that decision.

I know they are going total it and I don't feel like buying it back from them when I just recently paid it off from the bank. I mainly have insurance to save me from others--I could care less what I inflict on myself.

This truck is now MINE and I am going to whip it into some serious shape.

She is going to be off the road for a while now. I am trying to make mental images of it as a pick-up, as an extended cab pick-up, or as a soft top. I'm probably going to leave much of the side body damage the way it is. It's pretty fxxxed, but I am more interested in other things at this point.

I will say that I will still be a strong supporter of MUD--this site has indeed changed my life fully. I've met my best friends on this site--really good people.

And of course, I will still travel to wrench. This time probably via airplane as opposed to cruiser. :frown:

By this time next year, I hope to have it up and running in tip-top shape probably with some body modifications. I just don't know yet what direction to go in. I need some time away, that is for sure.

Thanks again.

If you need parts let me know. I am willing to pitch in anything from my hoard that you might be able to use as a good neighbor. If you want to fly to ATL on monday I am doing the surgery on the rear axle and upgrading to non-elocker with aussie and poly axles...then putting 6" springs on it the next week, then putting 38" Michelin XLs on the week after that! :)

Does the driver's door -pop- against the quarter when you open or close the door? A flat pry bar will work wonders on that spot with a little patience.

I think you can fix it if you aren't worried about a few wrinkles when you're done.

Get a body shop estimate on it. Take their estimate to the insurance company. Say that you estimate that you can fix it yourself for $2000 less than the body shop estimate. Say thank you for the check. No totaled out vehicle if your agent will play, and you'll have the budget to do what you want with it.

Oh, and you'll want to weigh this idea against what you think your rates will go up for making a claim.

Glad you two are alright. My best friend and I ended up just like that too a few years ago. I'm thankful that the two of us emerged unscathed as well. Good luck with all you'll be dealing with in the immediate future.

Mearly a flesh wound....................................;)

Great to hear all is well.
If you need the bolts for the controll arms, back let me know:)

I'm still a little fuzzy on the insurance logic myself. So they total it, you buy it back at a fraction of what they pay you and have money in hand for repairs.

I personally would go that route and then strip off what i wanted, part out the rest and just buy another cruiser. But I'm a lazy loveless bastid when it comes to my vehicles.

Insurance is not going to be involved with this. It is between me and the 80.

It sounds to me that beno doesn't have comprehensive so he is on his on for the repairs.

I'm a bit fuzzy too. This is how I got my cruiser. My brother was in a wreck with it, Geico totaled it out, and I "bought it back." Buying it back involved the insurance adjuster deducting $2000 from the check he was cutting me. That was it. It doesn't even have a salvage title. We netted $9k for a '94 w/ 148k miles on it. Imagine what you could do with $9-11k. You could easily 'build' it however you wanted, and still have a nice stash for a rainy day. Fawk insurance companies man, all they do is take your money and bend you over for more if you get a ticket. You pay for the service, might as well use it.

Not trying to rant at you, just don't understand the logic of giving up around 10k bucks just because.

First, good to know you're OK, beno.... You are, aren't you? Or at least, the same... :flipoff2:

2nd, I really regret not buying back the Windstar that the local body shop caught on fire while welding in a new panel. Headliner/roof was a goner, but heck the dash and front clip, undercarriage were just fine.... :crybaby:

Man very bad deal Beno, I am so glad to hear that you and your co-pilot are ok. Sucks when you do everything right and still get :censor: in the end.
Not surprising at all but very nice to see how good the people of this forum are to one of thier own during bad times. I know just how much that can mean. Best of luck with the repairs.
