That is awesome, great job. If you get some measurements, I wonder if a simple filter like this can drop in, lawnmower type.

Sure will get measurements for you guys.

Put the foam sponge lip on and stuffed a few foam split AC type sheets in there for the night.

Also happy with my renewed ac , blower and heater.

Can't wait to turn it on. Just in time for cool fresh air for summer.

Cleaned and replaced all foam pads and insulation.

So stopped for today. Hopefully will start again tomorrow.

Where did you get that rubbery foam for the hole you cut on the outside? I've been looking for that material.

Got it at our local hardware store.

It's an Ace product. This is of another type they have.

Happy hunting.

sub'd, cool stuff. After looking at your above pics it seems like it would be easiest to seal up all the other holes that are air inlets along that area and then cut a specific hole like you did to fit an aftermarket or readily available cabin air filter from your local parts house? Would be fairly easy to make some block off plates for the other access holes with some thin sealing foam tape and self tapping screws, then cut a specific hole to fit the filter of your choice? that way all the intake air would be coming in from that one specific hole you cut? just a thought, not sure if that is the route you are going towards or not?

No. I've just decided to create a tray with a retaining edge that will fit onto the blower scoop probability permanently with silicone.

Then all Ill have to do is slide a small common filter into it and slide it out when I'm done.

Will leave all current vents as is. Want as much air going in as possible. That scoop needs help. Plus would want water to go through for drainage and keeping that area clean.

Will first source a filter that will fit then a sheet of tin to make the tray from one piece paint it and glue it in place.

Stay tuned.

Thanks!

ah, ok I get it, so that large hole you cut is more of an access hole? I did not even think about water being able to drain, that is a good point. Would love to see someone make something like you are doing that we can just plug into that blower scoop.

Exactly, it's a access hole.

Yah I wish someone would...

@Mcladin This is a great idea and looks like it will be excellent execution. Can't wait to see updates as they come through.

question, will you have to pull that whole top panel to change the air filter or are you going to make an access plate in that as well?

For the time being yes.

Don't think I could pull off making a removable flap at home.

Ultimately will get another cover from the junk yard and get a metal shop to fab me up a sealed hinged flap that would be part of the long vent cover that attaches to the windscreen. Then swap it in.

The flap could be held down with those race type hood clips/pins but for the 1/5 scale RCs. Or an additional hood release latch in the cabin : )

I would design the cabin air filter box around a commonly used cabin air filter such as one used on Chevrolet Tahoes since they are also very prevalent in both the US and abroad. K& N makes a version that is cleanable. Wix 24483 fits some Toyotas...... Just thinking of something that would be easily obtainable by all.

I fully agree with the cutout of the top plate for installation. However, for a service port, is it possible to create a service "slot" in the firewall area that we could unclip a couple clamps, drop a hinged cover, and slide out the element, then slide a new one in?

Just spitballin' here........

Thanks I'll look around those makers of filters.

If you refer to this picture of the firewall

Would be tricky to move the wiper motor. Not much room above or below. It's sitting smack in the sweet spot.

But I commend you for the best idea that can't be done : p

OK I was thinking that the intake was to the RIGHT of the wiper motor in that pic. I've been think of a decent way to do this as well without having to remove exterior body parts to change the filter. The other thing that would be nice to incorporate if the K&N Brand of reusable filter was used would be to install an air purge kit on it as well with a 12VDC solenoid and a couple fittings and copper tube. I work in the dust collection industry and deal with filtration and such like this all the time, I just haven't applied it to my own LC.....Yet.

Of course, that would mean that the owner would have to have on-board air for a pulse system.

Keep up the great work! I've been watching this regularly!

Love the sound of the air purge system. Will look into that also.

On the way to drop off my kid to school this morning i remembered I have a small filter in storage that sits on top of the weber carb. So rushed home to see if it would fit.

Very close.

The only problem is the filter is very thick and impossible to manoeuvre in. Went and got a sponge to see and yes it's very close to the scoop size.

There is a small gap on each side of the sponge. I guess because the sponge is cut like that for ergonomics.

Will go get a bigger sponge for the temporary fix till I get the filter system done propa.

Could the filter be cut in half ? Let's see

This maybe a little out there but is it possible to mount the wiper motor to the under side of the hood.

Maybe i'm not comprehending this properly, but with an opening over the scoop won't water drip down on the filter element, into the scoop and down into the vent system?
