Maybe i'm not comprehending this properly, but with an opening over the scoop won't water drip down on the filter element, into the scoop and down into the vent system?

Yes you are correct will correct it by closing the new opening or modify the filter case to deflect water.

Still being studied.

Thanks

This maybe a little out there but is it possible to mount the wiper motor to the under side of the hood.

Um, you realize that the wiper arms are a mechanical attachment to the motor and if you attach it to the hood, the hood MOVES to open and close right? That means the arms have to move with it.

Not a likely modification.

On the way to drop off my kid to school this morning i remembered I have a small filter in storage that sits on top of the weber carb. So rushed home to see if it would fit.

Very close.

The only problem is the filter is very thick and impossible to manoeuvre in. Went and got a sponge to see and yes it's very close to the scoop size.

There is a small gap on each side of the sponge. I guess because the sponge is cut like that for ergonomics.

Will go get a bigger sponge for the temporary fix till I get the filter system done propa.

Could the filter be cut in half ? Let's see

Cutting the filter in half seems logical, as long as you are able to hold the filter together at the cut-off edge.

Stuffing the sponge in the hole will create too much resistance and the fan will not be able to pull air through it. The cabin air filters like you show in your earlier sketch would be the easiest application I think. Now, if there is a way to make it easily serviceable.

You may find a shorter filter too. Before I switched to dual carbs on my Ghia I had to run a pretty short one so the deck would close. Pretty sure it was shorter than that. Any vdub shop should have them.

For vehicles that are outfitted with factory cabin air filters, are the filters on the suction or discharge side of the fan?

I have had both. BMW's for example are in suction side, same Fiat, Land Rover is on pressure side.

Right, for got about that.

Had a crazy idea last night or early this morning. On FJ40s the air intake for the heater is on the side of the cowl, is it possible to draw from this location on an 80? This would only make sense if it made it easier to add a filter and being on the side it might be less prone to rain/water intrusion.

I've done this just to illustrate what I'll will do for the time being till i get a water proof solution in its place.

I laid a thick piece of rubber over the hole I cut and under the grills of the cowl cover.

That should stop any water going down. Very crude but will do the job.

Didn't have anytime today to go filter shopping. Was busy putting the dash back together.

What about running something like this on the cabin intake?
uploadfromtaptalk1429161915428.webp

I was also thinking about buying a sheet of it and covering the grids in the 3 intakes on the cowl. Figured between the two it would keep most out. Says it filters down to. 005.

Thats a great idea. The only problem is when it gets clogged not much air will pass through the vents on the cowl.

I have those pre cleaners filters on my 1/5 Five T Losi filter. They work well with a sponge filter.

Talking grain size. I consider feshfesh dust and not sand. Would that be fine sand on the charts below ?

Yes a combination of all these materials will give us the best result.

You have given me an idea.

I'm thinking of just going out to the truck now and putting a beanie hat on that bloody scoop with a set of the women's tights on it and be done with it.

And yes the tights will have a pin stripe for style.

Just incase your wondering hahahaha

Think this will be the best temporary solution till the main filter is developed. Could even be permanent and easily to clean and maintain.

Thanks ssyork

This could be cool to go on from @ssyork idea

With one of these filter below cut into a circle and placed over the scoop with the sponge sock on it and the mesh sock on that.

That's the direction I'm going in. No need for further structure building in there. It's very tight.

Do you have to remove the cowl to clean it?

Subscribed! I have been thinking about this for ages but as always it got pushed to the bottom of the list as I seem to have adapted to it here in the dry and arid areas. I use the 'blue' masking tape (unsure why it is blue?). It is designed to not leave residue when removed. I coved any door openings and seams (no not the drivers door silly), door lock barrels, pretty much anywhere I can and the feshfesh (don't start) STILL gets in

Will continue to watch this with interest....best thread topic for awhile

regards

Dave

Just came back from dropping the 80 to the electrician to rectify a few things and went shopping for filter parts.

Will use this to make the outside cylinder shape.
ImageUploadedByIH8MUD Forum1429175884.374709.webp

Will cut this to make to top part of the "hat"

And went and got this mesh box made to house the paper element from a toyota ac filter. Between the mesh so that it does not fall down into the blowers fan.

Will lay everything out before I start.
