FJ60 security options ? (2 Viewers)

I park my 60 on the street in front of my house every night - because it doesn’t fit in the garage - and I live pretty close to downtown in a big city. Knock on wood, but no trouble so far. I do leave the transfer case in neutral next to 2Lo - hopefully the fact that the 2Lo mod isn’t represented on the shifter knob throws people off even further. The fact that each one of these trucks has its own special starting procedure (choke, pump throttle, feather throttle, etc) is a small layer of security too.

I have plans for a hidden kill switch but haven’t executed it yet. Haven’t found a foolproof way to do a tracker yet - I don’t want a monthly subscription and the Apple ones will notify anyone with an iPhone.

In the past I’ve heard mention of fuel cutoffs and I like that idea - the thief gets excited because the vehicle starts but then when it dies at the end of the block they’ll ditch it. I’d rather they do that then start hacking wires or messing around in the engine bay trying to get it started in the first place. The fuel cut rod seems like it would make them give up more quickly after the false hope of driving a couple hundred yards.
I have a '69 BSA Victor and its starting procedure is about 5 steps including advancing the piston before kicking it. (It is a perfect DWI test.) I bet I could let 100 people try and start it and no one would be able to. Of course, they could just chuck it in the back of a pick up, too. lol

coil wire removed from the distributor would stop most. Even just unplugging one side

Guess they could push it or tow it still but at that point nothing is stopping them

I like the fake ignition coil wire that has two correct wire ends with a piece of vacuum tube in the middle. Not obvious, even to a gearhead. I worry much more about tow-away theft, however.

Tow Away/Flatbed is impossible to really prevent. The rest is a mix of visible deterrents for crackheads, and kill switches for your mid level thiefs
Yeah, my wife and I were in Naples (European car thief central) and we had a fairly nice rental that was just plucked off the street in front of our hotel. We did hear an alarm go off from our hotel room at about 5AM and my very astute wife asked if that our rental and I sleepily replied that I didn't think it had an alarm in it. The next morning we had planned to go to the beach and in the place where our car had been parked was a very similar looking SUV and I kept mashing on the key fob to get it to unlock...mashmashMASHMASH. Nothing. I had to look in the front seat to realize it wasn't ours.
At first we thought it had been towed since we were in a tow zone after 8AM.
The woman at the rental counter snickered when we said we thought it had been towed.
Luckily my USAA CC has built-in insurance and we hadn't left anything in the car overnight.

Exactly. Make sure your Cruiser has agreed value insurance, and keep it paid

For AirTags. Do Speaker mod for sure, otherwise they'll just constantly beep when they haven't been seen by a home device in 3 days.

Speaker delete is super easy to do and reversable if you want :

Throw them into a magnetic case or just bury them somewhere hard to find. Not too deep or surrounded fully by metal cause you still want people walking by cell phone to pick up on them. So like deep inside a box tube of steel might not allow for signal to easily get out.

Can print a magnetic case if you have a 3D Printer.

Buy the same case off Etsy if you dont have a printer

Higher Quality options but a bit more $$.

TagVault that attaches with UHB adhesive.

Magnetic TagVault. Seems be a really high strength option. (Ill prob swap my 3D printed ones to this just cause of how beefy it seems, just bigger so cant slip them into small cracks as easily)

All of the suggestions here are good ones.

Bare minimum:

I’d recommend everyone install a kill switch and use it daily. There are vendors making them on mud. (Or it is a simple enough electrical system to inter up the coil with a ground, or starter signal if you would rather not have it crank)

Inexpensive tracker - I use an AirTag (speaker removed and 3dprinted mag mount) mounted high up inside the rear quarter panel. You would have to know where it is to see/access it.

I like the 2Lo suggestion as an additional low cost deterrent.

The above will give you additional layers of protection and tracking that will help if the vehicle deterrent systems are overcome and the ability to hopefully see a location or cause someone to ditch the vehicle because they can’t find the AirTag.

You are probably into the above for sub $200.

For more extensive measures:

Additional layers of security could involve rfid switches to switch your kill switch or have it set-up to switch a fuel cut off valve.

I’d love to layer this in my own rig for the convenience factor alone.

Would prevent the screwdriver starting the ignition. If they bypass the starter kill switch they are only going to get so far with the fuel cut off.

Prices to add these two things would be about $200 in material costs approximately.

Lastly would be to add a gps tracker (monthly fees) with geofencing (get a notification that the vehicle is moved outside of an area). Some of these include sim and activation type so that you can deactivate the efi circuit or fuel line switch and starve/immobilize the vehicle (gamble if it is driving or stopped). Wire in a hidden secondary battery or make sure that it has one internally in case someone disconnects the main battery. Hide the antenna and make sure it still works for a signal in case someone rips out extraneous wiring trying to hide gps signals.

With a pro car thief. If they want the vehicle they can get it with a rollback truck and drag it to where they can lift it.

I’d still like to be able to know where they take it so I can contact the PD and send them to recover it.

Hope that give people some ideas they hadn’t been considering.

All great suggestions!

I'm super paranoid about it given where I live and the fact that two of my neighbors have had their cars stolen, another had his brand new Tacoma harness cut from some idiot who thought he was cutting cables to the battery. I've had my rig broken into a couple times (and I had to chase off some people twice in the last week) but I don't keep anything in it and I have several things employed to minimize the risk of the rig from being taken.

1. Cruiser Cults anti-theft harness.
2. Clutch/brake lock - this is not 100% secure but it will take a hell of a lot to remove this and is externally visible before they break your window (hopefully) - you can cut the steering wheel locks off in probably 10-15 seconds but these will take some doing to remove and it can't happen easily.

3. Two air tags in a magnetic case in different locations. Of note - the speaker mod is a must but even if you remove the speaker, it still makes a faint beep that a thief will hear if they park in a quiet location and try to find it. You MUST cut the copper wire that surrounds the speaker as well (can do this with a sharp knife) . I removed the speaker and still could hear mine - it was faint, but still loud enough that it could be located by someone (I could hear it when quiet hidden in the car still). If you cut the coil, it will be completely silent.
4. Wifi camera on my car next to my house which pings when someone is in the 'active zone.' This came in handy twice in the last week! Bear spray is next on the agenda for next time...

Yup, Still available! I need to make more diesel units and will soon. But we have the gasser ones in stock and more on the way.
Do we know if the FJ62 kit would work with an LS motor that still uses the stock ignition?

OK, So we I spent a lot of hours, and money fixing this truck up to be what we want. Any now we can drive it around, which mean we will be parking it all over. It gets attention (which is awesome and I love when people want to talk about it), BUT I am very concerned about security.

What has everyone done in terms of anti-theft, locks, etc. ?

I want to make sure it is always there when I come back.
Being in Florida just catch a Python and leave it in the car.
