Just thought I would throw this up, as members are always looking for ideas. I picked up this fan setup from Summit. They draw 18.5 amps each, 3750 CFM. The shroud fits the stock radiator with 100% core coverage, and will mount to the existing fan shroud bolt holes with supplied brackets. Good reviews! Manufacturer is Derale

I've often wondered how much more consistent I could have the temps on my truck run with fans like that and a good thermal controller.

I even think a puller fan mounted to the AC condenser and tripped only when AC is on would help a ton!
 
Why? running a non stock motor ?
 
what is the demonstrated performance of this setup (if you have it installed), what are you using as the fan controller? Assume your A/C is functional too?
 
I don't have it installed yet. The ECM will control the fans for temp and AC. 1 is set to come on at 195, and the second at 205. I am using the PSI wire harness, and it has signal wires for Fan 1, fan 2 and AC

Ok, you might want to scan through some of the threads dealing with electric fan setups, if you have not checked that out. The real test will be off-road in 4wd on long extended hill climbs in low speed/low range in 4wd with reasonably high ambient temps. Add other electrical loads and a/c in the mix too. I think SPAL has a similar configuration. Setup looks good and fit looks good on what you've posted. Not sure what the recommended CFM rating is required for cooling GM small blocks.

I prefer the old school GM fan clutch and related fan clutch mechanical fan for cooling, thats whats on my 5.7 swap. From what I've seen the fans that really perform, draw some serious amps with respect to electrical fans. I don't recall many having good luck with overall cooling on electric fan setup, those that run off-road and have a/c and everything functional. I messed around with electric fans for a little bit because at one time I was concerned about the clearance between the engine and radiator core on my setup (5.7 swap), but later on found out that I just had enough clearance to run a GM fan clutch setup, and custom fan shroud.

Post up when you have things running and you can test performance off road on cooling. The "good" on electric fans is that you can have 100% cooling capability at zero vehicle speed but high engine temps, the bad is that if your cooling needs overwhelm the capacity of the electric fans its a no-win.

I think the radiator size in exposed surface area of the core is an issue that is problematic with cooling of V8 swaps on the LC family of vehicles which of course is not something that is easily solved. I've found that the 4core OEM style radiator combined with a GM fan clutch and associated GM fan that match the GM donor engine, along with the custom fan shroud solve the cooling issues, such that can be dealt with, within reason. Plus no worry about electrical load or other gremlins.

Very good information. It will be a while before I would need to run AC in Minnesota.

I am running dual batteries to help out with the electrical load

Hey, thanks for the idea! I ordered the exact same thing and installed it on my 82 FJ60 running a 5.7 with a dual-battery setup. Question for you - did you need to update to a high-output alternator? Thanks! Eric

Got this exact dual fan setup on my 89. I have a 4BT Cummins with dual turbos and dual batteries. The current alternator is not strong enough to efficiently work all the accessories, so I'll be upgrading it here shortly. I feel like the fans aren't working as strongly as they could be.
 
What size alternator do you think will be sufficient? I’m on the fence with electric vs mechanical. My 6.2L is coming with a 160amp alt.
 
Thanks for posting this. I've been looking around. This looks like a good setup.

It's weird that every time some posts on electric fans, someone needs to post about the superiority of mechanical fans. No cars come with mechanical fans any more. With a decent 200 amp alternator, there's plenty of juice. They are very reliable and no more likely to fail than the clutch on a mechanical fan, and and they are much, much more adaptable.

I ran a Mark VIII fan at 4k to 4500 cfm... and that was not sufficient for them Colorado passes....
Just curious as to how this performed....

I'm running it now. It's a good fan, but like I said I need an alternator with more juice. I have a mechanical fan that's on all the time and I switch on the electric fan when I need it.
 
I just put them in for cooling my ramjet. We live at 9000ft outside of denver. So far I like em! Once that second fan turns on though you can really hear it roar. It hasn't been very hot here yet but pulling our camp trailer up 70 the temp hasn't gotten over 190.

It might be surprising, but sometimes people post things they don't actually know anything about!
 
Cars don't come with mechanical fans more because manufacturers are trying to pull maximum fuel mileage rather
than cooling superiority. Mechanical fans have more hp draw on the motor . Government regs are demanding
better and better mileage so the less draw the better. They also save weight. Lighter weight means better mileage
I still believe a good mechanical fan and good shroud will pull more air than electrics. But if a car is moving down the highway
most of the cooling is being handled without the need for much of a fan. As @Elbert said, the test is in a place like Az in the summer.
I installed the dual 14" spals that are built into the Ron Davis radiator on an LS FJ40. It cooled ok but in the summer both fans ran constant after warm up, especially with AC. They about 25 amps each and they are loud. Griffin and Howe only offered dual 12s on their
24x19 core and both said I would have cooling issues in AZ for my intended application. Ron Davis is out of Glendale Az. They managed to stuff dual 14"s into the same radiator core. He said he was confident with my application but agreed the 12's might be an issue here . The 60 has better aerodynamics so I believe cooling is better compared to the 40. I've always thought the 40, in general , was harder to find the right fan and shroud combo. I bought my 78 FJ40 brand new. It always ran warmer than all my stock 60s at highway. I attribute that to airflow. I think Toyota's engineers were less concerned with highway performance with the 40
