I am planning to lower the sound levels in my ‘75 FJ40 and use it more for some commuting as well as local trail use. I am changing the gearing and using sound deadeners. it’s New Jersey…almost any trip can be a long ride and usually a touch better with an occasional music or talk station keeping me company. While I listen a lot to Doctor radio on SiriusXM , old age, the occasional Cream or Hendrix tune usually gets cranked up

My last Land Cruiser had a home-made box in the back with speakers and an amplifier to over-ride the sound levels in the cab and the topless roadways.

It’s been 2 decades….has anything evolved into the latest speaker options without haveing to build a box to house speakers? Currently, I have a pioneer am/fm/cd radio that plays thru a pair of 4” no-name speakers in small black plastic boxes tucked into the rear corners on each side of the ambulance doors. Is something available for front and rear?
Not my area of knowledge and a few guys here may have some valued direction to head towards

As always, thanks!

While not directly on point, to the extent that you have not already done so, you may want to consider some noise mitigation in conjunction with your decision-introducing on "sound"/tunes. Our cabins our quite noisy. There have been loads of folks who have posted about their solutions for sound dampening /insulation. I forget, you may have already tackled this. In our case, a carpet/felt kit from SOR made a big difference in both dampening the sound and lessening the heat transfer.

I bought a Crosley mini BT speaker about a year ago. It seems like the magnet made a dark corner on the display of my no-SIM-card phone that I use a player when I had the two items stashed together. Also, the 'phone' will turn itself off due to overheating when it receives direct sunlight in the summer. So, both the portable (flammable? batteries), and wireless (it needs a dedicated home away from my gear) aspects of the system is kinda backwards. Consider charging duties (constantly plugging and unplugging 40%-80%), and that I'm using the passenger seat to merely hold the phone, and that I can't see the volume buttons when I can see the screen, and I can't always operate touchscreen controls accurately while driving, so it is often more frustration than it is worth.

I've had a nice CD headunit in the dash, but, I didn't know about the leak in the cowl. Then I wired-in 12V computer speakers, but, when charging the phone, it picked-up way too much ignition noise. Now, I typically just try to enjoy the ride - there isn't much that is really worth listening to, and the trips are typically kinda short anyways.

Strap a bluetooth soundbar to the roll bar. Can hear throughout the truck and play whatever you want from your phone, or installed Bluetooth stereo.
Definitely some validity to this. Current running off BT speakr
I went old school with a Kenwood shaft style to fit the inner brackets....

And a few Bose in the back to pipe the tunes.

Any chance you have the details on those speakers? I am looking to put some speakers in that same location.

I have that sound dealing carpet and covered it with the city racer floor mat for a “stock’ look. That helps I am also changing differentials to drop my cruising rpm and lowering engine noise. That alone will be a benefit. I use a Bluetooth capable iPhone and subscribe to Apple one family and have Amazon price for about 15 years now…the Bluetooth ideas are going to be the best option. I’d been running wires and cutting holes in doors since I was 16…looking for the easiest way. @Jdc1, I like that little box for $28…$38 if you want a color other than black….black is perfect and it will arrive today

The old fart in me enjoys hopping in the Chevy pickup and within seconds, on my way…press a button and everything is engaged. When I can “rough it” the 40 goes instead. Although I miss roughing it, it is easy to take the pickup and just get it over with. I’m starting out with the @Jdc1 Bluetooth speaker. If needed, I could upgrade to a Carnegie Hall style unit later. Gee, when I get done with this Land Cruiser I would need to sell it for more $20,000.00. WAAYYYY OVER $20,000.00 😂

This speaker was a pleasant surprise as I had my doubts. For $17, you really cant go wrong.

I have this installed in mine - it is fine - get above 65 mph the sound of the transmission and rattles really dampen it. So what @Green Bean stated - or drop in a 5speed to lower rpms. :)

I got the speaker brackets by the kick vent and plopped some best buy return speakers

For Sale - Bluetooth Stereo 100% Hidden, only takes up the space of a dash knob! (Custom knob included) - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/bluetooth-stereo-100-hidden-only-takes-up-the-space-of-a-dash-knob-custom-knob-included.1264367/

I have the JBL charge 5 in both my 40's. I mounted them to the tuffy consoles with a mount i found on Amazon. They sound great and are plenty loud when the top is off or on.

Did someone call?? :)

I appreciate the shoutouts and yes I was making these for a couple years.
I stopped putting them together because I went in other directions with my time and effort’s.

I recently have been asked by several members if I had any thing left over and I have been cleaning out the last of my inventory. A couple units are shipping out tomorrow. I’m pretty slow lately. :)

The units themselves are available on Amazon at low prices so I recommend checking them out.

The reason why people bought my units was because they came with a custom knob to match your factory dash knobs. And yes my units were a bit pricey but making the knobs was a bit of a time consuming process.
