FJ40 Roof Cross Bars vs. Roof Rack (1 Viewer)

I’m running this Yakima setup and it works pretty well.

1. The 1A towers will barely clear the roof, but you won’t be able to fit anything under the bar. If you only want to load things on top (wood, canoe, etc) and tie down on the sides it’ll work. Any sort of accessory that needs to clamp under the bars won’t work without the ‘high rise’ tower extensions.

2. I had to buy the 66” bars, if I recall correctly the actual min distance is 60-62” so Yakima’s 58” bar won’t work.

This picture is pre-high rise extension. The back tower is the problem.

I like mine for sure but for what its worth to other people I think the early fj40s with the corrugated sides had different fiber glass roof caps that are taller. my same setup would not even attach without the high rise extensions on the yakima towers. With the high rise I still have to place it just right so it does not rub on the back one.

I have the same bars and towers and switch them between my 40 and my 60. I have them a bit farther rear (rear bar) and forward (front bar) and it’s still really tight.

Thanks for this, mine is precisely a corrugated top.

Any bars' weight limit will exceed the weight limit of the gutters. I don't know about the Yakima specifically, but the Thule will. I think both those guys buy each others' stuff when they design theirs, so it should be close to the same.

If you're getting a deal, buy them. Someone always wants these things. You'll be able to turn them if they don't work for you.
Amen to this - Yakima 1as are easy to buy, easy to sell. Have done this a few times, finally learned to just keep ‘em, cause I’ll eventually have another truck that needs em. 80 series, 60 series, or 40 series.

Do you have any pics of the hirisers installed on your corrugated top? Likely what I will have to go with. Thanks!

Old thread but I like this hat channel idea for a crossbar - what gauge / size? Still using or change to something else? Thanks!
I'm still rocking the crossbars, in fact my ski rack is still bolted to them!

They were bent out off 10ga steel to match the contour of the Con Ferr rack that I have. I forget how long they are.

I can get measurements if you need some.

It's cool that you made them! I don't have the capability to bend some on my own here, but knowing that they are 10ga is helpful. I can find hat channel stock though that's probably close, would just need the width overall. Length I'm guessing is ~60"?

66"

I had a local metal shop bend those up, for cheap.

Pics.

Because everyone likes pics.
