I did a search but can't find anything on whether anyone has ever installed shocks on the hood to replace the stick / prop. My hood leans since there is only a prop stick on one side - and, well, I'm anal and it's bothering me :flipoff2:. Was that stock setup - driver side prop only? Has anyone done a shock on each side - if so can you point me in the direction of a thread or write-up?

I have a '72.

Thanks.

It seems to me most people just flip the hood up and lean it against the roof. I know I do, I very rarely use the prop.

10-4. Trying to preserve the brand new paint job by not leaning it against windshield / top- also feel like i'm going to bump the hood and it's going to come crashing down on my head. I'll come up with a plan shocks and post pics when i'm done with what i ended up using.

Howdy! I think one of the biggest challenges will be finding an mounting point, especially on the hood, that will hold the weight/stress without buckling. There is virtually no frame in the hood, and not much more in the fender, to carry the stress load of of a spring loaded shock. You may have to tac in some extra angle iron to spread the load. John

No fj but have seen it done on Jeeps. Ironically I just bought some mounting pivots to do just this yesterday.

Not my 40, but I think this is what you had in mind. I don't remember where I found this picture, I just thought that it was a good idea.

Early 40s had the prop on center of the hood.

Yep, that's where mine is located on my '71.

And if trhe hood is being warped by having the prop on only one side.... add a prop to the other side and use both.

As for leaning the hood against the roof, I just put a split piece of large diameter heater hose over the chrome mohawk thingy on my hood and is cushions it against the roof.

The biggest worry with leaning the hood against the roof is not scuffing the paint, but having a breeze slam it on your head or hands. My Dodge M37 has a special latch to lock the hood to the windshield when it's in that position. I hadn't thought about it before, but I'm gunna see if I can dig up an extra set and install them on my FJ40.

The owner of The Toy Shop in Denver had hood struts on his 40. This was in the late 90's or early 2000's.

His IIRC attached where the windshield bumper mounts are. I remember him saying it took a lot of trips to the local parts store to get just the right length of strut.

Great idea though.

If I remember correctly, a little plastic clip like thing was installed on the roof drip-rail edge to protect the paint from the factory. The landpimp has posted a picture of said clip before here on this forum. That WILL be a rare item to find unless C'DAN has a box of 'em hid back!

Not really a rare item. 63119-90300. $3.46 national retail (CDAN is back 25% off of this). Good luck

It's number 49 in this schematic from SOR. Works great, but I would recommend siliconing it to the drip rail. I lost two of these now. They are small and white in color. Good item to include if you are doing a large SOR order.

I installed a rubber bumper from Ace Hardware on the hood that protects the hood from getting scratched when I rest it against the roof drip cap. It works great and I have been using it for a good 10 years. It did require a 1/4" hole drilled in the hood. If you need photos of it let me know. I carry spare ones in the glove box.
