I’d like to start using the best available oil filter for my 1997 FZJ80. In my research it looks like the large OEM filter is no longer available and I’ve read a couple of posts stating the smaller filter caused a knock or ticking on a cold start. I find this odd as you would think the smaller filter would fill quicker. So, what are the thoughts on the best oil filter? I appreciate the help.

Thanks

Robert

That's a thousand word essay (all wasted) with 98 different opinions (all based on personal experience).

It's been discussed in the past to avoid the cheapest WIX filters but since then WIX was bought out
by Mann Hummel, so IDK if that still holds true.

The whole "best oil filter" topic has been discussed dozens of times on the forum, try a search of old threads "small large oil filter"

There is a small difference in the pressure relief valve (opening) range between the large Toyota filter and the small current filter which may be ?? why Toyota switched half way through the production run (1FZFE) to the smaller filter. Don't ask what difference it makes because it's negligible, basically one opens, or bypasses, a tad sooner (at a lower pressure) than the other if the filter media becomes plugged.

Also, any larger filter can hold more dirt than a small filter, but not a major factor for the majority of owners (because not much dirt gets into the oil),
so personal preference.

Keep in mind, the best oil filter is a good air filter (and tight air intake system).

Some people use Magnets on the outside of their oil filters, debatable if it makes any difference, but if you want check out FILTERMAG.
Summit Racing sells a pair of Filtermags (for ~ 360' coverage), which model to order depends on the size of your filter.

Bottom-line: use the correct Toyota filter for your year/model. After that it's your choice, simple as that.

There's nothing else to know but if you want to waste a few hours go to Bob Is the Oil Guy forum and search "Best Oil filter" and you'll get a 98 different opinions.

Or, go to you tube and spend a few hours watching 47 different yahoos tear apart oil filters that tell you nothing about the filter's reliability or efficiency.

Large OEM filter is readily available! It’s just a different part number 90915-40002, or 90915-TD004. Just buy a OEM filter large or small and focus on the next project.

Can't go past a genuine filter, small or large. The price is right and quality in my experience is better than anything aftermarket.

The Kernal knows, 100% agreement.
These beasts are so over built that not buying the real (and inexpensive) OEM filter is time taken away from real potential issues like the upper Dingle arm Bushings, or, the muffler bearings.

FWIW, this shows what other models/engines the 90915-40002 filter fits. It's a bit shorter than the original tall filter and fatter than the small filter (so somewhere in-between):

The 90915-TD004 is the same size as the original tall/large filter but a bit harder to find:

OEM or Donaldson filters.

Donaldson is one manufacturer that meets or exceeds OEM quality.
They design and produce filtration products for large fleet vehicles, mining industry, and industry in general.

A member on a now defunct Aussie 4x4 forum was a professional in this industry. Several times he posted detailed analysis of numerous filter brands, oil and air filters.
Most OEM filters consistently out perform most aftermarket products in every criteria.
Donaldson filters were on par or exceeded OEMs, K&N consistently ranked at garbage level.

The small OEM filter works great, is easy to get and is inexpensive.

I bought a case of them a while ago, they even come with a plastic seal to keep dust out when stored.

I think the only FINAL CONSENSUS on oil filters is, Yes - you should use one. 😂

I wish the 90915-30002 oil filter fit the 1FZ. Going on Toyota's parts website it seems like I could buy on for $22, but they say it doesn't fit. I'm not exactly sure what is different about the mount to make it not fit. Its been discussed on the forum before.
