I've already started making the front bumper guides for the starting handles , working on getting the first batch ready to go out . Huge thanks to Numby for providing the example to copy from - he got it from Marv at Specter just prior to his passing , no less .

This was a fairly easy part to make , trying to price it fairly so folks can own a very hard to find part . I'm trying to gauge interest in several other parts to help decide if they are worth the effort -

Starting handle for 4* series
Storage clips for above starting handle
Jack extension rod storage clips
Possibly the set of stamped steel tool bag retainers

Need to prototype these parts first and gauge difficulty of making them . There are limits , of course . I have a set of jack extension rod clips and most of the tool bag retainers .

Need to find a correct starting handle - the fact that the storage clips on the rear fender and next to the driver's seat are on different planes means the bends in that handle have to be spot-on perfect or it won't fit in the truck correctly . I think the alloy for handle is nailed down , just need to make an example and see how easily it will bend turning over a cold engine . From what I understand it wasn't too hard to destroy the stock handle so I'm trying to avoid making something inferior here ....

The storage clips for that handle have proved so elusive it's amazing . I know they were only really available on the early model trucks and I have one pair that I think is out of a 45 trayback or something with the offset mounting holes . I can play with the dimensions from that point and make clips that will work but it would be nice to find at least one original , verified part to copy from .

Trying to stick to small parts that are NLA - just steel or aluminum stuff - no rubber or plastic .

Opinions ??

I've been looking for a starting handle/guide for a while ... I'd certainly buy.

Ok , great . My issue with the starting handle is cost to ship , have to look into that part as it may not be cheap . The steel I have isn't light for it's size and due to length there is no way I can keep the price down to what Toyota sold them for years ago . I'll get it figured out but for now a stock , unbent example would sure help .

View attachment 1012817 Per our earlier conversation, you aren't sure if the 55 handle for the tire carrier and the starter handle for the 40 are different/same?View attachment 1012816it measures about 47" long and 3/4" thick.
As always.. Let me know if I can help.

Great , I need some seriously detailed measurements so these things are right . Ok , OCD is a bad thing but dammit that's the only way I know how....

Can you take a good rafter square and use it to show the landing points of the radius (important info for bends) with a good tape to show the beginning/end of each bend ...
Appreciate the help , trying not to be a pain in the butt ...

Not a pain.. 15 people have gone from the house, so I will see what I can do tomorrow. Tonight is drink in hand and feet up.

No , I think those are the early jack extension rod clips before they went to the newer light sheet metal type . I'll try to import a drawing...

These use two bolts or small sheet metal screws to hold them to the body and store the starting handle . Someone posted this pic in an earlier thread I started somewhere...

Not sure who the photo's belong to but they are a great help to getting these parts made . It is nearly impossible to gauge the size and angles from just a picture and I'd rather get this stuff right the first time .

What year FJ40 had the crank start? I didn't know they even existed. Always learning
Thanks

Great work, Sarge!

From the EPC, it looks like the FJ55 spare tire handle = FJ40, 45, 55 starter handle:

Toyota Part Number: 51409-66010
HANDLE, STARTING OR SPARE WHEEL CARRIER
Replaced By:51481-65010
This part fits the listed vehicles and their options:

Model Year Trim Engine Important vehicle option details

Land Cruiser 1969-1982 6 Cyl 3.9L, 6 Cyl 4.2L 2F, F; FJ40, FJ45, FJ55

FYI, the starter claw nut is not installed on 81-newer engines. The 81- hex nut can be replaced w/ the earlier claw nut if desired.

From the measurements of the one in post #11, It looks like mine has been added to. It measures about 47" and looks like a piece has been welded in. If the radius corners will help. I can figure that out.
Also, I don't remember my bumper having the holes for the guide to bolt on to.
