About 100 miles on an oil and filter change.

Newly rebuilt smog pump from BZ.

Very little fuel in the tank.

Nice and hot.

Forgot to change the air filter.

Have the 2F emissions manual and plan on going through it, but wondering if this points out anything obvious to anyone.

Thanks!

High HC suggests running rich, high CO may be your cat converter. When was the last time the carb was rebuilt? Also can retard timing to 5* BTDC to assist, any more than that and it'll fail the timing check if the tech even looks.

More information would help. Original catalyst? Valves ajusted? Miles on truck? Timing set?

I've never changed the CC

Valves could probably use attention

Have not checked the timing but passed the smog?

Haven't rebuilt the carb in a while.

Was just taking a shot trying to get this done.... Thanks for the feedback!

Be sure your air pump is actually putting out air (should be a pretty good breeze coming out of it) and consider putting some E-85 gas in your very-low tank, doing the e-test, and then quickly adding real gasoline back to the tank. This is a typical move in Colorado to get high CO trucks to pass emissions. The E-85 provides more oxygen (just like an air pump). Replacing your air filter should only make a difference if it's really nasty.

There is of course no substitute for getting your carb and emissions system dialed in, along with your valves and anything else that hasn't been touched in a while. Change your air filter if it's dirty.

But in the meantime, if you can't find E85, throw a bottle or so of Iso-Heet (red bottle) into a ~half full tank. Bring it in hot and test again. Then fill her up afterwards. I bet it will get your CO down.

Heet is dirt cheap and in every parts shop and lots of hardware stores. And there is nothing illegal about putting it in your tank. Once upon a time we used Denatured Alcohol for that last push from "fail" to "pass," but Heet is a good substitute.

You just barely failed, you should see mine it's like no hope whatsoever of passing. :bang:
The suggestions are good and maybe give it a try. Post up when you pass and what you did.

I would confirm you have a good valve adjustment first. I am in California and have been though this a lot. From my experience there are a lot of the smog systems that can be dead / failing and a well tuned engine will still pass, the bar is pretty low for these old tractors.

I just compared my readings from my last two print outs and I noticed that you don't measure NOX where you live and the max readings are a little bit more in comparison to mine. Where did you get a smog (county or city)?

Passed today. A bit multifaceted unfortunately.

1) new air filter - old one was severely cracked and dirty.
2) empty tank > red bottle of heet > 10 gallons regular gas > 15 minutes on the freeway > 15 minutes to smog shop
3) previous testers left charcoal canister input locked off with their long billed needle nose pliers. I found them in the engine compartment two days after the first test. Negotiated to cut retest fees to 1/3 list.

Passed. 🤣

She‘s 100% due for valves, cap, rotor, plugs……but now I have some room.

Best of luck everyone! Thanks for the tips!

Glad to hear another one made it and two worry free years.

Notice the OP’s test station did just the idle and 2500RPM test. No rollers and 15/25mph test under load, and no NOx reading. This is usually only allowed for older vehicles that are full-time 4wd.

It’s generally a lot easier to pass this version of the test but until this year I have not had a smog station allow it, since we’re not really full-time 4wd. But last month the smog shop I went to here in Oakland insisted that I could do the more simple test and I definitely didn’t argue. I was expecting to pass anyway but my numbers were even better than expected.

They still do the other checks - CA cat, EGR function, gas cap, timing, etc.
