Looking at buying this engine as a replacement for my 78 fj40. Being advertised as a 75 2f.

So what are they asking for it? Has it been compression check? dry/wet and what was the direct read oil pressure. Thanks

$1200, no comp numbers or oil pressure numbers. the motor was pulled for a ls swap. All new gaskets installed painted just a light refresh. Comes with trannys and t case.

Just trying to confirm it’s a 2f and the year. Still learning very new to the 40 scene.

I think that is older than 75. My guess (and purely a guess) is because that is a 3 speed bellhousing and clutch, F intake manifold and stamped valve cover. All of these things are changeable between the years so could’ve been swapped on. The oil filter on the passenger side makes me think it’s what some refer to as the F.5. Would need to see that stamp pad number.

It’s also the older vacuum actuated 3 speed t case and column shifted 3 speed. Could be 75 out of South American or other import?

Not a 2f. Maybe a late F, (F.5).
I would be suspicious of some selling that as a 2f.
I would definately want to see some numbers.

Glad you checked. There are a bunch of guys on here that know alot more than me. Keep asking questions.
Best way to learn.

As Shreddy said above. So many parts are interchangeable. It woyld be unusual for someone to put a bunch of F engine parts on a 2F.
It is common to see 2F parts on an F engine.

May 28, 1974

Your first picture, 40528 is the casting date code. So the block was cast May 28, 1974.

What I’ve found looking at several 68 through 74’s comparing the casting date to the chassis number, the block casting should be 2 to 4 months ahead of the chassis.

Example, my 68 had a build date of February 68 based on the chassis number, the engine casting date was December 22, 1967. I have a spare F block that was cast November 12, 1967.

Those casting dates make sense…..as compared to the chassis build date.

Just my $0.02 I’ve got a 8/77 40 and I’ll be looking for a late model 2F from a 60 series or a 3FE if my motor lays an egg. I know the 3FE will be more work but having owned a 3FE swapped 40 it’s a great motor in a 40 and they are still out there to be found as guys LS swap their 62’s and 80’s.

I’ll have to read up on the swap would he nice to have fuel injection for sure.

It’s my understanding the F series motor will mount with minimum modification, you would keep and reuse your bellhousing, transmission and transfer case. If upgrading to a later model H41/42 and split case you’d need a later model bellhousing and would need a transmission crossmember.

Unrelated I love your work on the 1FZ’s in the 80’s section. I’d definitely be interested in one of your motors if I managed to kill mine. Good luck with your 40, looks like a lot of work but you’ve got a pretty blank canvas that you can do what you want with.

Unless you want to rotate the transmission like the 3F bellhousing does a four speed bellhousing pre 8/80 would work with a four speed and split transfer case. The early four speed bellhousing will work with a crossmember under the transmission. Would be pushing to use a H55F five speed or a PTO. Crossmember would be preferred. Losing the hand brake off the split transfer case on most cases is another problem. My suggestion is figure where you want to be at the end before you start buying parts.

When you use a later bellhousing it requires an adapter for the clutch slave cylinder. The early bellhousing slave cylinder mounts to the motor mounts some modification would be required if using a crossmember and doing away with the bellhousing motor mounts. But it not that hard.

I currently have a 2f In the truck but it has not run in 10+ years. I will focus on getting that running then doing comp and oil pressure test. Going to need lots of hours out into the whole truck but will start with a list and slowly chunk away at it.
