I'm about to replace the failing valve stem seals in a stock 1971 Fj40. I've read countless posts about the process on the later 2f engines but not much on the 1f engines. Can the "improved" 2f engine valve stem seals be used on the 1f engine?
I think the new 2f ones are suppose to work and are "better" from the post I've read. 1f seals can still be found here and there, maybe still being produced, but the 2f ones are apparently a better design. I too need to do this eventually. I've been driving around with at east one bad valve stem seal for about 7 years. Tons of smoke on start up so oil is burning from my tailpipe
Ill will be interested to see what everybody else says about the 1f seals.
Instead of creating a new thread, I am posting a reply here in hopes someone is following this thread that knows what to do in my situation.
I am replacing the oil seals in my 1971 40 with the 1F-155 engine. In the image below, on the left is the spring bottom and seal that came off and on the right is the new seal. My question is whether the bottom spring keeper remains on the head or is discarded with this new style seal? I ask because the old style was rubber and would in theory seal against the spring keeper where this new seal has a metal body that will allow oil to seep underneath.
And my final question is, Does anyone have some experience to share about how to get the spring keepers off and back on easily? With my springs fully compressed and valve fully extended in cylinder I still have a devil of a time getting those grooves in the keeper to allow the keeper to pop out with a magnet, or fit back in as easily as other valve spring keepers I've dealt with. Hoping someone has some wisdom to share. Thanks for any advice on either of these questions.
