Duratrac's a good compromise for everything? (1 Viewer)

Got the 265/75/16 size and mounted them up today. They are a huge improvement over the destroyed 285 M/t's that were on the truck. I felt the 285's were overkill for what I am going to do and wanted a little better street manners for dd use. These tires are quiet, smooth, and tame on the street. Hopefully I can get up in the mountains soon and use them for what they are made for. Thanks for all of the input!

I had the old style MT'R's before and they badly wore on the shoulders on the front tyres and needed continual rotation to even things out. With absolutely NO other changes to the 80, the duratracs have had very even (if not imperceptible) wear with similar use.

I've had them in snow, in sand, on forestry roads/tracks (good to bad) and small amounts of mud and they've performed very well and I've not been disappointed.

I'm not a "spend 4 hours to drive 2 miles" kind of 4wheeler and prefer getting places the easy way when possible (due to my oz background). So these are not going to be the ultimate rock crawling / neck deep in mud tyre, but for a tyre that needs to GET YOUR THERE via pavement and then allow for moderate wheeling I think they're hard to beat. For the typical use our 80 sees I can't imagine ever going back to a mud terrain tyre - too many compromises for not enough return. Now, in oz, I do have Cooper STT on my nissan there and I like those tyres a lot (so far).

Tyre choice is definitely something personal, just like asking what is the best colour choice for an 80 - which is obviously white! :)

285 size. This is a trip the kids & I did a month or two ago. About 10k miles on the tyres at this point and they still drive true and quiet. Will get them rotated soon, though I don't see any weird wear patterns etc.

and earlier this year - the tyre marks are ours. We turned around when the snow got impassable and found a small clearing to make 'camp' (slept in the 80 with the kids)

I've been looking at those for a while. Duratrac 285's will be my next tire.

Thought I would give an update. I have had these tires on moderate Colorado front range trails every weekend since I purchased them plus driven every day to work and back. I am very impressed with everything about these tires, so much that I bought another set today. I stepped up to 285's after I decided I needed the ground clearance for the trails we have been doing. Didn't think I would need a 33" tire but I would strongly push anyone on fence to go with them if you are going to do any real wheeling. The 265 size is perfect for dd, highway, and easy to moderate offroad trails where ground clearance is not a big problem. If it starts getting gnarly you will wish you went with 285's :)

I am 1300 miles into the Durtrac. Great on the road, quite enough for me. Great in torrential rain.
I put them on my main set of wheels and moved my MTR Kevlar to off-road set of wheels.

So far really good. I am sure they will do fine in off-road, but until I wear out the MTRs Kev I will be taking those to the trails.

I have read on MUD that Duratracs were on sale down in the US at Sears for a little over $200. What do you guys down South consider a "good" deal for duratracs (315's)??

I just paid $215 each for my 315's. Sears price match (I don't like their mount and balance deal so I had Discount Tire match the price).

They stuff quite nicely. The front doesn't look like it will rub (Thanks to the hammer and the lousy front-end flex) But the rear rubs on the top of the fender well.

I picked these up a few months ago and so far really like them. Was able to get the 285's for $192 each from Discount Tire with a price match from Sears.

There is no such thing a good compromise for everything :D.

I'd be tempted if they ever make a 38x11.5, because for a GY that would be about the diameter of my current tires, but slightly narrower.

All I have to say is wow .. the best deal I can get up here is $280 a tire and that is with a $400 discount! What a joke. I guess I need to drive down to Discount Tire in Washington. The problem is that by the time you drive down and drive back and calculate the costs associate with that .. the price will be close. I can't stand getting ripped off on tires up here ..

Guys does the 285 fit under our rigs in the spare spot. I have a 97 and am in need of new tires and I really like the Wrangler's.

I have the 285 duratracs

It sucks up there fine on my 97, then I did the spare tire mod for the tire carrier and it works fine with that too.

kbahus-

How have they been in the last couple of storms?
