Duratrac's a good compromise for everything?

My brother replaced his BFG TA KO's w/ Duratracs on his Tundra and told me it was a night/day difference traction-wise in snow/ice.

I've got 285/75/16 and drive 100 miles a day (70% highway) they ride great, not very noisy at all (actually a lot quaiter than I expected). I've gone through one heck of a mud hole, no issues and with the bad weather we've had I've driven in 8" of snow, no issues and 1.5 of ice, no issues.

Time to brag a little.... I also towed a 2009 Ford F250 off of a thick sheet of ice (up hill) in the Lowes parking lot. the truck had slid and come to a stop against one of the shopping cart holders and was stuck! I think his quote was, "you can't tow me in that...." I said "umm... let's try". His co-workers were surprised when they came out and saw I was pulling his truck off of the cart holder and around tha parking lot, to a better area.

I realllllly wish they had this tire in a 255/85/16 size. The 285/75/16 duratrac keeps coming back up on my tire list even though I really want a skinny tire in a ~33 inch size.

I have 315/75r16's with studs for winter use. Can't say enough about them. Traction has been very impressive in the snow and ice. Ride quality is excellent. Noise is a non issue IMO. The only downside in my opinion is that the sidewalls are pretty thin. Not the tire I want in the rocks personally on a 6000lb+ truck. But for my intended use I could not be happier.

Excellent traction except when braking on ice... that could be b.c my ABS is turned off. I got really squirrelly yesterday passing a car and fought off 4 or 5 skids before I ended up in a gravel lot on the wrong side of the road and was able to stop. I have put about 4k miles on them and have been up to 80mph will no problems or balancing issues.

Duratracs

I just put a set of studded, siped, 325/65/18 Duratracs on my supercharged Tundra for winter use. They are amazing in the snow! I've got some offbrand of studded tires on the 100 series and they dont perform near as well on snow & ice. My summer Tires are Nitto Trail Grapplers, which are a bit quieter, but ice skates in the snow & ice. I'm thinking I might get Duratracs for the 100 series come spring. Can anyone attest to their durability on the rocks at all?

I have been running Kelly Safari TSR 285/75/16 for a few months in the snow. They are a great tire. I like the Duratrac but the Kelly's were much cheaper in my town. $191/tire mounted, balanced, ect... The Kelly is a lot quieter on the road than I expected and handle well on wet pavement.

I wish they made duratracs for sienna mini-vans

I can't keep my wife out of my 80 this winter with these tires

Homemade lift for the Sienna and small duratracs? They used to run small BFGs on old subarus and porsches.

It's always good when you realize that BFG AT ko's are "night".

My guess is that studded tires don't work all that well in the rocks :hillbilly::flipoff2::eek::grinpimp:

I can't believe how good they are in the snow.

Why not? This tire design (lug void in outer tread, tight inner tread, reasonable siping) is exactly what you want in winter conditions on a 4x4.

I would guess it was abs issue not tires!

And exactly how does ABS affect poor performance when passing in icy conditions?

I have seen where a couple of folks have mentioned they lost up to 2 mpg because of the soft rubber compound of the Duratrack. Is this a real confirmation or a couple of wry ones.

I don't get overly concerned about mpg, I do drive an 80 with extra weight, sc, 33in muds, etc. But I may be changing jobs that will put 80 highway miles a day on the cruiser, so a coupl mpg will make a difference worth thinking about.

I lost a little over 1 mpg on both Cruisers according the Scangauge going from stock size tires to 315's. I was expecting a bigger drop so I'm happy.:D
