Thats the one thing i wish i had on my trip was a buddy to come along for the road trip.

I'm glad you are driving it. If it happens to crap out along the way then ship it home and fix it the same way you would if it broke down while in your home town.

If you have any problems post here first. There will likely be a mud member not far away who can lend a hand. Failing that you can ship it like Cimarron suggests.

If it were to break down it just means you make and get to meet a new mud friend.

Drive it back you won't forget it
A buddy bought a 49 Merc in California talked me into coming with him to drive it back
He neglected to tell me it had sat in. A barn for twenty years and hadn't been ran for as long
Took a couple days to get it running change fluids
Have a resemblance of brakes
Figured we would stop and get tires put on it
Thats when the tire guys find the rattle snake nest in behind the spare tire
Sort of slowed that process down lol
Car boiled over all the way home to Canada was a awesome trip in a car that wouldn't do 50 mph lol
And looked like a steam train going down the road

I just purchased a 77FJ40 and drove it 1300 miles home over two days. It was a blast! The truck was running much smaller tires than you are running and I still did 65-70MPH. The 77 got about 14-16MPG, some windy areas really took the fuel. Many here have already said it, "It's all about the adventure". My wife gave me "The look" when I asked her to drop me off at the airport with my backpack but then again she knows me. The truck had 54K on the ticker and was a one owner. I stopped into a hardware stoe and purchased a gas can, (3) qts of oil, a highlift jack, an LED lamp, a bike tube and some zip ties. I carried two small pairs of channel locks, 6in1 screwdriver, tape and epoxy in my backpack. The onle real issue was my right leg position did get old. Doing this again I would definitely orchestrate some type of hand throttle. No radio and I made the trip alone but in the end I wanted to become familiar with the 40 and I did. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat!!!!!! I'm not sure when this is taking place but if you need a ride-along let me know. L

I would drive it if you have the time. Double check all the usual stuff like fluids, belts and hoses. Get the AAA Plus coverage that includes tow service up to 100 miles, some 10mm and 12mm wrenches and a few spare parts. Fuses, belts, oil... Looking at that engine bay Id want to carry a few extra feet of vacuum hose.

Check out @hecrod 's thread Across North America in 5 Weeks, its a great read!

Thanks for the prop Ryan... the trip was a blast... will never, ever forget it... memories that WILL last a lifetime!

That said, I've owned my 40 for a few years, and I knew exactly what I had. If you read the thread, you will see the detailed preparations that went into it (went through all mechanical / electrical / braking systems months in advance, replaced some parts, brought extra parts, GPSs, backup GPSs, fuel and water jerry cans, phones, even bear spray!:D), and it was still a little nerve-wracking at times... in the Summer!!!

Breaking down... in the plains... when it gets dark early... in a beautiful 40, but one which you happen to not know much about... and in Winter (and that's The Key Factor here)?! The probability may be small, but the consequences???

But maybe I'm just a worry-wart.

So, I for one will avidly read your posts... and truly wish you all the best... but frankly, I will be a little worried too...

Be prepared for a break down have. Some food cold weather gear maybe a portable propane heater
Or some candles even

Thanks to everyone for the good advice. I shipped a box up to Sheridan with some tools, first aid kit, etc, so I didn't have to travel with the heavy stuff. I figure when we get there we can swing into a Walmart and grab tent/sleeping bags and some other gear. If we need it, money well spent.

So when does this epic journey start????

We fly out this Wednesday morning and get there around 2pm, gonna try to get to a Walmart or somewhere then hit the road and get a few hours in.

Go for it bro-my first drive the axles almost came out-seriously!!!! But have fun

AAA and flatbed-been there, done that. Hopefully you have no issues but count on feeling like a cripple and maybe ready for dialysis after the adventure. Plan on taking a few days to recover before you go back to work.

You're going to be fine. Don't forget bike tubes and zip ties, a guy can repair a lot with them.
