I'm sort of a newbie to turbo's so take this with a grain of sale.

What what's wrong with #1?

Also, why would putting the turbo in the engine compartment suddenly require all of these things? Seems like if you can run your turbo without them, you could also run an under the hood turbo without them, too.

Not trying to poo-poo your idea, I think it's awesome! Just asking the questions I don't understand the answer to.

Thanks!

Yes, you do need a turbo manifold to install a turbo under the hood. Just to explain, a turbo manifold is just like your headers except for the fact that it has a flange to bolt the turbo on. You pretty much need everything on that list to install a typical turbo kit.

why are you guys so concerned with turbos and water .?

Nothing it's gonna happen even with mud on the turbo itself .. it will be an issue if your IC get clogged in mud ..

True- Turbo diesel 80s have been dunking themselves for a very long time. In fact some of the more epic water crossings on YouTube are performed by TD cruisers, and I haven't heard any prolific screaming about failed casings on the diesel boards from water crossings.

I think the mud concern was with plugging up/damaging the fins on the intercooler.

If only there was more room :hhmm:

or maybe another turbo deisel conversion

I'm curious how well it would work if you placed it inline right after the first cat? Essentially replace the 2nd cat with a turbo. Shorter run for piping and protected by rock sliders although the heat would be higher.

Funny you said that because that was the first place I intended to mount. However fitment was an issue. It can be done, however it sat a little too low. It mounts just perfect in the back and just tucks up so nice. It sits up much higher than the frame.

Unfortunately I have a subtank up in the back area :crybaby:

I figured it would be a little tight and I definitely see the advantage of tucking it up high. I imagine swapping back to stock is easier as well unless one could get the dimensions the exact same as the 2nd cat.

So I think I am going to do this even if you don't offer a kit. If you do though it will be way easier on me;)

I am planning on getting kits made. First need some more tests done including dyno and smog. Then I will be in production mode.

You are actually goin to try to get a CARB approval? That would be SO nice!!! Otherwise just make it simple to remove, maybe if we used 2 air cleaner boxes... One for turbo inlet and one for smog? Or are you thinking of a diff air box all together?

Bump for dyno numbers :D

Will be making an acceleration video this weekend showing the speedo. Then I have to make some time and find a 4 wheel dyno. In the meantime, I am sourcing parts and getting ready to start making kits available for purchase. But before I do that, I have a few people that wanted this kit installed. Planning on doing the installs first to see how they work on other rigs.

Have you come up with a rear snorkel type intake? Pics underhood of how you are piping the air inlet?

Thanks
Matt

Planning on just running the inlet pipe to the factory airbox. Just want to keep it simple and low cost for people that already have a snorkel.

Ok, cool, this way i can get an extra box for smog time!

I am sure it will past smog without visual inspection. I am actually going to smog soon just so I see the numbers on it. But you can easily transform from turbo:steer: to NA :deadhorse: in about 20 mins.

Actually, come to think of it since i used to be a smog tech...

Anything Post Cat/o2 doesn't matter and intake before MAF is legal....Damn, since its a rear turbo i thk you will pass even WITH visual!!!
