I have a 1971 fj40 that had the old 4:11 axles.
I replaced them with later model 1980 3:70 axles.

The tie rod connecting the wheels was fine and then the body swap I used bent it really nice for me.

I have the old tie rod from the ~71 front axle. I believe is was 39 1/2 inches long.

The later ~80 tie rod is around 42 if I am not mistaken.
I am not shopping around and wondering what the correct length is for a later model ~80 tie rod length is.

Does this story sound right to you guys?

Thanks,

Jack

lengths should be identical

I ran into something similar, years ago. Replacing tie rods on my '74ish Pig...old part numbers had been superseded to a newer one. And the newer rods were too long. I had to cut a half inch off each end to fit them.
