This is my first post. I bought my 81 FJ40 in Chile _ immaculate, no rust, 80k miles etc _ when I was living there. Bought a tune up kit from Cool Cruisers of Texas as well as radiator hoses etc. My mechanic said some of parts _ spark plug wires, distributor cap etc just don't fit. This is my first FJ40. Called up Cool Cruisers and clerk explained that the difference may be where mine was manufactured. I knew there were some difference _ I have the split bench seat in front, a different dash etc _ but didn't realize there would be differences in distributor caps, spark plug wires etc. Does this make sense? Are there other differences in parts that I should be aware of? Picture of engine and car included. Looking for some help. Thanks!

Lots of differences. Most important lesson is to not buy mechanical parts from Cool Cruisers.
I will take that as a newbie lesson-learned! I was kind of surprised that when I called them up I explained
- with such excitement _ that I just bought this new-to-me great FJ40 and I was living in Chile while working for the US government. As I go through my points, no mention about the oil-bath air filter and that the carb will be different. Live and learn. But that's the fun of these old vehicles! I'll go with specter off road this time!

A lot of emissions related differences. My 81 fj45 from Chile had an oil bath air filter. Looks like you have split rims as well. Also there was no choke.
Outstanding! how'd you get a chile vehicle? The short story of mine is I was there working for US government, was moving to next post and wanted a durable vehicle and I knew these were down there and could be found for a bargain. Did some looking _ so many were heavily modified and chopped up _ until I found mine, which I bought from a guy who had a collection of vintage motorcycles, an old 1970s Datsun and another FJ40 and a BJ40. I thought the only differences were minor cosmetics _ like the split bench seat, the no dash etc -- didn't thick about the carb being different due to emission issues and the oil bath being a south america thing. What are other differences I should be looking for as I start going over the vehicle. So far just cleaning up a 35 year old suspension and what not.

My story of acquiring my Chilean cruiser is less interesting than yours. It did offer me the opportunity to chat with Marv Specter on a few occasions. I bought it from SOR after Marv and his wife had made a trip to SA to get parts and land cruisers. It was a FST and was painted a custom olive green that had been requested by the Chilean army. It was pretty beat up but Marv's guys put it in pretty good running order. Most of the differences are captured in the replies above. From what I understand most SA cruisers got semi float axles. I kept it for about 8 years and then sold it to a friend who dropped in a 3b and h55f 5 speed. You probably have a transfer case ebrake which is different from the us cruisers which have a rear axle ebrake.

It depends on the year. My far east vehicle has the split bench seats, no dash, has vent windows when the us version didn't, almost no emissions stuff, and I think the rear doors are different. When in doubt, use toyodiy to check out your exact vehicle.

Is it a mistake that your location is listed as Cambodia?

Your 40 probably uses points compared to a full electronic set up like in the same year US Cruiser. It may have an octane adjuster on the dizzy, like early US spec cruiser

Yes, that is another difference on mine.

My '80 FJ40 originally came from Ecuador. It came from the factory with emissions, heater delete, power steering, and front disc brakes. It has since been desmogged. It may have come with points ignition but I'm not sure. Also, I think most outside continental US cruisers had 16" split rim wheels.
