Grabbed a hub to hub rear axle yesterday at Pick n Pull. Now I'm unsure of its gear ratio. Is there any identifying number or mark on the axle housing itself? I have the vin for the truck, but did not write down the axle code from the vin plate. Have been through all the links on diffs here on mud.

Yes I know about the colour code. My 1990 22re has a pink pinion and 4:10 gears. There is no paint on this pinion unless it is black. I tried the spin test. It is definitely over 4, but a bit hard to tell 4:30, 4:56, 4:88? Maybe the diff was worked on at some point, so no paint on the pinion? I will try the spin test again more thoroughly, maybe closer to when I want to regear, like in the spring. Just trying to be 100% sure of what gears are in there.

Just looked up the vin on the Toyota DIY site. Says the truck was a manual transmission with either 4:30 or 4:56 gears. Now I'm a bit worried that I have a 4:30 diff. Was trying for a 4:56 to run 32" tires better.

Yeah I now think the count is close to 4:30, which means I probably have a very heavy housing to play with. I thought a shop press was needed for reassembling axles and bearing seals etc? I'm hoping to find an e-locker with 4:56 gears before I start swapping things out. the whole rear end was only $80 can or about $50 USD.

You need a press if you are replacing the bearings and seals but to remove the axles all you need to do is remove the 4 nuts that hold the bearing plate to the housing. elockers came in 4.30 and 4.10

I thought I saw 4:56 in an e-locker somewhere? Or can an e-locker be re-geared? Huge expense?

I believe you are correct. I had this discussion with my dealer (Cruiser Dan) and he indicated that a 4.56 e-locker is available from Toyota.

I'll defer to Dan's or Beno's expanded knowledge, but I can't find a P/N for an e-locker with 4.56 ratio anywhere. Doesn't mean they don't exist though.

I have re-geared several e-lockers, it's no harder than a regular V6 diff. I have one in my garage all apart now that needs pinion bearings, had 4.10s in it. But it would be a good opportunity to re-gear. Wanting to get rid of it...

You can also put I4 gears in a V6 and E-locker carrier. The pinion just needs more shims.

I will be at the dealer tomorrow. I'll ask the current fellas there and see if they can come up with a part number.
