I have a 1994 4Runner that is fitted with a Limited Slip Differential and recently i bought an old handbook that showed an optional Diff lock button on the centre console. Anyone know if its viable to change to a locking diff without changing out the whole differential.

If you mean a factory diff lock, definitely not. The diff carrier, diff housing, side gears and axle shafts are different.

Aftermarket locking diffs which come with a diff carrier will fit, but you'll need to rebuild the differential.

a factory tacoma / 4 runner electric locker can be retrofitted. it is not a drop in.
it is still an 8" so axle shafts still work.
use Google to research. not terrible hard if you have some fab skills.

heres a vid i made.
