Hi all. Just wondering what everyone is doing for auto insurance on their daily drivers. I would like some kind of full coverage, but seems all the collector car policies put restrictions on the vehicle for daily driving. Plus this has been a father son project from the start 5 years ago and only reasonable I include my "now" 22 year old on the policy which makes things a little more tricky/pricey. Right now I am running on basic liability coverage and while my FJ40 is not a nut and bolt restoration, I feel it would still be in the 20k range and feel like I am running on borrowed time, especially being in Chicago area where there are just a few other drivers on the road with me!
Obligatory pics because it's no fun without pictures!

You may have to get a rider on it and insure for actual value, or go to a specialty company that will insure it without too many weird mileage restrictions.

Not too many places put value on older vehicles any more.... however today nadaguides put avg at 26k ... low at 11.9k... high 63.7k

when i totaled mine years ago they (ins co.) gave me an in-between low and avg... and i kept the truck... back then (90's) the values were NOT like they are today however :)

other person was 100% at fault

Hagerty is an easy option. They have done many 40 series before.
Agreed value and pretty cheap.... Mine is $595.00 per year with a value set at 30k. With a 6k miles driven per year guesstimate.

$0.00 Deductible...

Thanks all. I should probably revisit Haggerty. I think a few years ago, they were higher than that with my son on the policy, plus they require a full year policy where you can't suspend for the winter (which is basically what I do now with salt here in Chicago in the winters). He's now away at school, so maybe it makes sense to not include him on it. Thanks for the input.

Just ran a Grundy quote and it's $193/year for 25K stated value on a '78 FJ40. That's cheaper (or the same) as my JC Taylor, and allows 'driving to work', which JC Taylor does not. I may just switch to Grundy. The last quote I got from Hagerty was $360/year.

my Gruncy quote was also about 190/year, but when I tried to add my 22year old son to the policy, it was rejected. must be 25 or older. So that rules out Grundy. Haggerty allowed me to add my son, but jumped to 640/year. ouch. Kids are expensive.....

Adding to the Grundy Insurance thread - I added my FJ62 today, and with a stated value of $15K, the premium was $210/year. With a stated value of $20K, the premium was $130/year.

The employee told me that higher stated values sometimes result in lower premiums. When she ran the value to $25K, the price went to $163/year, so it started to go back up at that point.

So, if you call Grundy, fish around a bit on pricing and in my case, I saved $80/year with better coverage.

Steve

I have USAA for all my cars, but the cruiser I was able to get good coverage on a stated value of $30k, $500 deduct, about $480 per year thru state farm. Granted, mine is not a daily driver, but at least another option.

81FJ40 - is that a 'limited use' policy - for car shows, etc. - or can you daily-drive it on this USAA policy? Agree that price isn't too bad.

I'm also in Chicago, would love to see this beauty in person some day.

Hagerty is an easy option.

I'll second the Hagerty recommendation. I actually tried to cancel my Hagerty policy a few years back due to assumed/perceived daily driver type limitations. They clarified some things for me. If you stay under the promised mileage limit, the only limitation was that you aren't allowed to drive the truck for any commercial "for profit" use. You are allowed to drive the truck to work.

There are some weird limitations like you have to have a residence with a garage, they wont insure the truck if you have to park it on the street.

Just received my Hagerty renewal, $415. 00. It's plated as a historical vehicle.

I have Haggerty on my Chevelle and am very happy and I’ll put it on my 40. I have no mileage restriction on the Chevelle but they said I must have another vehicle insured as my daily driver (it’s through a different insurance). I also have agreed value and cherished vehicle coverage which means if it’s totaled I get it back without having to buy it back; cost an extra $11 a year.

Hi, We should not have trouble these days showing these trucks as collectible and not just old. Their value is steadily increasing. Insurance costs should not be too much of a risk as we protect these trucks as much as possible. I’m extremely cautious when driving . However I have not been pleased when dealing with insurance co.s when hit by other drivers and it was there fault. Mike

Usaa has connections with American Collector, but they have severe restrictions on use. State farm does not. The 40 is not my daily driver and my premium was based on driving less than 4k miles per year, mostly in the summer. But it was pretty painless and went with a stated value. Just had to provide some pics.

AAA uses American Modern for "collector car" insurance.

Always worth getting another quote.

I use USAA for all my vehicles. $25K of coverage on my 40 for $32 a month, no mileage restrictions and free towing within 100 miles of home.

Geico. That's where I've been for about two decades. The Lizard will insure for stated value but you will have to document that value upfront. In other words, you can't insure a piece of junk and expect to collect on an $80 k truck.
