Just don't look up close.

I think it looks great! Now I just want to see it on the trail. Keep up the good work.

I still think that Isabelle will be high school before this thing hits the road....

How old is she now? How much time do I have? Part of the problem right now is book sales are 60% less than last year ... and last year was one of my worst years ever. That means no wrenching money.

Besides, technically, it's been on the road, under it's own power. Just don't tell the fuzz.

No worries, you have 11 years to finish up this project :D

Let's put the pressure on. Colin will be there in 7 years.

Pressure is on.

I cut out the second half door last night and I should have it welded up tonight.

This weekend is looking dandy for painting. With any luck, and the wind doesn't blow, I should have both front fenders done, and the first coats on the windshield frame and all four doors. The cool thing is I can now move Da'40 out of the garage for more room.

I really want to take it to the Rising Sun Rally in August. I would need to take the torch to my buns to get it done by then.

or at least the "HDC Columbus Day in Moab" run. :D

edit: we should make a cool name for that trip. it is a yearly thing so far.

Jon, I think you are past "baby steps" on Da' 40! maybe you should start thinking about a new title for the thread. Looking good, none to say the least. Oh, I forgot the encouraging comments. Why ain't you done whit that $hit yet?

I think it's all still baby steps. They are starting to add up to something though. You might have noticed I no longer call it a "basketcase." It really is beyond that now.

Door Handle Trivia

When I acquired Da'40 it came with two sets of doors. Awhile back I took them apart, but didn't notice then that the handles were different. One set came apart completely, while the other pair has an additional pivot on the handle that appears to be pressed on. Both sets are very rough.

What I'm going to do is take the simple handles apart and have them zinc plated. They will get reused. The second set will be replaced with aftermarket handles from CCOT.

Man, you've got door handles on the brain today!

Dad's been talking about Roundeyes almost all afternoon now. ;)

Dan

Roundeyes rock.

Actually it was dark and I wanted to continue working on Da'40 so I took door handles apart.

Pappy's Paint Shop

Back at it. Great day for paint.

Wings

While waiting for paint to dry I pulled out the bits that make up the rest of the doors. Windows, hardware, window regulator, etc. I decided to "restore" one of the wing windows. First step was to figure out how to get the latch off. Turns out to be pretty easy. There was a drift pin that needed to get pounded out. Then removal of a nut took out the post.

Next was to sand down the window frame, mask off the glass and rattle-can spray with black paint.

Those door handles look like something you might find on a covered wagon! Very primitive design, but interesting.

When you're all done with this, you'll be able to rebuild a 40 one piece at a time! Wait a minute - when you're done with this, you will already have rebuilt a 40 one piece at a time!

I'll tell you what... I will give you $20 off AND ship the skid for free for anyone who shows up to wheel tomorrow. I'll even do the same deal for the new 40 skids that we do.

Well, well, well. Guess what I found on my door step yesterday? I needed a dang fork lift to pick it up. Ya, I know ...

SWEET! Pictures definitely--especially of how it fits around the H55f and split case.
