Good news today. The machine shop is already making a special broach to cut the radius on the gear insert. The brass is available, and once a prototype is completed, it will be smooth sailing to make more. I have to commit to 10 in the first run. I have already done that with the gear that Pablo sent over. Now, my only concern is the issue of there being another gear out there.......can anyone give me the year it changed, how it is different, and can anyone send a sample to make a run of these also if they are in demand?

It is looking like the cost will be $50 each. I am hoping that will not change. Is that fair?

Midgainc,

The one I sent you was from a 71, I'm not sure about Pablo's.

I think $50 is more than fair.

I am sorry, my mind is fried....Pablo didn't send me one! Earlier in the thread, there is a photo that shows one like the one that you sent, and someone says this design is a later design. Do you have any reason to think that yours had been updated along the way?

I'm in for a 72 and 76 gear, whatever they're determined to be.

Also, since you're project oriented and more proficient than I, a thought.

Wonder if your machinist would be capable of a hinge pin and bushing solution or possibly a hinge rebuild service?

I'm in the beginning stages but the only shops I deal with are production and they don't vary from that.

Let me get the gears done, and then I will drop the hinge deal on him. I am sure he can do that. I am not sure about costs, and what he would use for a bushing or pin. I read the following thread the hinge repair thread the other night, again. I think it was Lil-John, that was using an 8mm pin and some brass bushings. My machinist buddy may have a better idea. I will check on that. I have at least two hinges that need reworking.

I picked up bushings and working on specific pins that are the correct length and correct knurled area, but having a hard time sourcing.

I realize there are existing solutions, but willing to either put the work in on a more elegant one, or get them done. Have (12) doors with (24 total hinges) and three hoods worth to do....because two Pigs weren't enough....

Anyhow, just tossing it out there. I'm all about DIY projects, but I have many and need to get this done to finalize body work.

Are you having fun yet?

Midgainc,

I don't have proof it's a 71, but I have a brass gear from another 71 and it's the same. I'm guessing it's an early style.

You can put me down for one. This is a pic of the one in my 69, which has been updated to a later model according to an earlier post in this thread.

Just a suggestion, but it may be best to have everyone post a photo of the gear they need since there is no guarantee you can match up the gear just by the year of the LC you have.

The badly worn one I removed today looks like the one in the photo in #290 and like the one that scrap daddy sent me. The machinist is going to compare the worn gear with the scrap daddy one, and make sure they are the same diameter, width, tooth count and arbor. If they are, then we are going forward with it. If they are different then we will scratch our heads. I will have to b certain about which gear is needed and which one will work in my regulator!

On the hinge deal, if you have bushings sourced, they can fab a pin to the exact diameter needed and out of whatever metal you want. 8mm seems to popular with liljon, but the W drill bit is needed to ream out the hinge. I think there is a better way. I will show him a hinge and let him ruminate on the solution before offering your, mine, or liljon's solution ideas. Sometimes getting a fresh look by someone who solves these kinds of problems routinely is good because they don't have the clutter of 10 opinions from MUD! Once the gear is well underway, I will do that. What if he could overhaul each hinge for $20 each? I would prob be willing to pay that. This is a nit picky little time robbing job that doesn't give a whole heck of lot of satisfaction when you are done, IMHO.

I'm in on the hinges and now have (12) doors and (3) hoods worth, to do (if hoods are possible and would include the limit pin with CClip. All mine are bent)

I have sourced the correct pins with the right diameter to do lil' john's method, but the knurl is too tall to not extended into the bushing.

I don't see an elegant way to remove the knurl elegantly and a custom run through Fastenal would require a quantity of more than all the Pigs left on the face of the earth could ever use, economically speaking.

I've located one local that had the ability to crimp the knurl, but doesn't sound interested I'm doing and I won't beg.

I'm in, mostly due to lack of time to allocate to the stage I'm at, so this would allow for more pressing issues.

You mention Fastenall....it just so happens that I own an industrial supply business that competes with them in fasteners. We sell all kinds of drill bits, end mills, inserts, wide belt sandpaper, etc. that Fastenall doesn't carry too. From time to time we source custom made threaded items, it i haven't even thought about doing that for pins. If I had a drawing of what is needed, there is a chance that I could get exactly fitting pins made for the hinges. A rough drawing is all that is needed showing diameter, length of knurl, length of smooth, and any other details, like a snap ring groove. No promises, but it it may be possible. Of course, it may be cheaper for my machinist to dot it with things he can hobble together. You have me thinking...

Have drawn, all but the bore size of the center, since an assumption on what the standard wallow is, and that alters the pin, the knurl, and the bushings.

Also have the brass bushings from SouthBoston to work with, too, of determined viable.

I'm in for one if these come reality!

BTW, Nik, i posted some photos of what I have been doing with the parts rig....it aint pretty. took the back half off today. If you are curious, take a look on my primary thread. Thanks again for being patient. I got some really hard to get body parts, and I may end up using the chassis instead of mine. The tailgate is in great shape compared to mine, but I am not sure the hinges survived the disassembly. A lot of the bolts on this thing have been seized up. I think I got something from you in the mail, too. I have not opened it yet.
