Hello All!
I've been lurking for awhile now after purchasing my first 60 in March of 2023. After replacing all vacuum lines, power steering pump, rebuilding the carb, new fuel pump, fixing the timing, rebuilding the front knuckles, new rear brakes, new J tube & gasket, etc I am now getting to the fun of the engine block.

As I could now replace every vacuum line in my sleep, I still had a slight leak and the only culprit left was the the manifold, so even-though it looked like PO replaced the manifold gasket, I decided I needed to pull it off and low and behold, the springs in the horns were gone so I believe that's where my leak is coming from.

On removal I noticed some corrosion on the block and wanted to post a few pics to see what you all recommended or thought might be the cause. And if I should be concerned or not.

Many thanks on taking a look!

Looks normal for a 30+ year old engine. The cast iron rusts after a few decades if its not repainted. It’s unsightly but not a structural issue. The exhaust ports on the head look like there was some exhaust leaking
I'm not an expert, but maybe the manifolds aren't flat, so didn't seal well when the PO changed out the gasket, allowing moisture in?

To my non-expert eye, that looks like heat damage from the exhaust manifold destroying the paint on the block. Not coolant leaking out

oh that's good to hear! The heat shield was in 2 pieces, but in fairly decent shape...

Appreciate the advice!
I have the assembly fairly straight. It's about .013 max on the exhaust and book says limit is .020. Still think I might want to get it machined to just to make sure. Anyone know of a good machine shop in Los Angeles? Valley preferred if possible?

The top picture has a freeze-plug with a heat-tab in it. Those almost always are there when the block/head has been rebuilt to monitor for over-heating and warranty.

My guess is the iron has corroded because they stripped the block and head in a chemical bath and didn't repaint.

So, I would clean and scrape best you can and repaint with a good engine enamel.

Looks like an aftermarket headgasket, too.

I'm just south of this shop on the other side of Ventura. Thanks for the recommendation @Spike Strip !!

I had near identical situation on my 2F. Decided to replace the head gasket and check the head. Glad I did and would recommend the same.

That's great! Thanks for the heads up. I pulled the pully/HB yesterday and I think my crankshaft is toast as the key was squished crossways. So now I'm going to open her up and rebuild the whole thing I think. Appreciate the heads up.

Where in Dallas are you? My wife was born and raised there. Parents live off of Mockingbird near white rock lake. I'm originally from Amarillo.

I am gonna be the sole voice of disagreement here. That looks to me to be, not corrosion, but deposits from a slow, long term seepage of coolant. Not enough to drip, just enough to evaporate in place as it escapes, leaving behind the deposits that you see there. I have seen this a couple of times. Most recently due to a gasket that was just barely damaged on installation, causing no other problem beyond a very very slow leakage of coolant.

Mark...
