Cooper STT vs Toyo Open Country 315's

So with J's front and back and a 1" spacer up front, that would put you 1" taller than me, or close to it. Do you think that 1" buys you much? I think you would only have to worry bumpstops in the rear.

No I don't think an 1" is that big of deal. Do what Christo said and drop the bump stops and be happy. I have two friends running 35s with OME med and heavy 2.5" lift and I don't have really any more flex than they do in the real world (on the trail). I've gone Js two times immediately on my 80 builds. It doesn't really cost anymore so I figured why not get the extra lift. Now slider and bumper height that is a completely different story. I'm much taller than them at the frame. I would say almost 2". However, they can pretty much go anyplace I can go so I don't see a huge advantage in the real world.

Hey lucky me, I get to be in the same decision boat as Romer..

reports I've heard are they have been great all winter, but again Ken had them re-siped. I probably wouldn't do that, as I think it leads to needless chunking... just slow down and leave more space ahead. I'm leaning hard towards the toyos at this point in time though, but dang they're expesive - $307/tire at 4wheelparts. Searching now for a better deal..

edit: ok this is better, $210 per tire and $165 shipping crap that's still a pile of cash tho

I went with the 285/75/16 Coopers because they were lighter than the Toyo's, a smidge smaller or larger (Coopers fall in the middle of Toyo sizes), and were cheaper. I discounted the Bridgestone Revos and BFG All Terrains because the Revos were the same price as the Coopers and the All Terrains were only $100 cheaper. So that is basically how I came to my choice and I don't regret going with MT's at all even tho I hear the Coopers wear quickly Eh by then I will hopefully have my FOR lift and be ready to step up to 35's

ive heard that cooper actually made this tire from the same cast as the STT. can anybody prove or disprove this? unfortunately since i heard this they have changed the mountain cat tread pattern a bit but the side lugs look similar. also the mud terrain radial is somewhat similar. but being Les schuab its only a west coast option.

I have the Toyo's in 285 and they were $203 at discount. I called one of the discounts by me, told them that I could get them online for $183+$20 shipping and they matched it. I called the discount on Smokey Hill and Buckley if it helps.

I have had both the STT and now the Toyo and I think that STT wears faster.

Good to hear - keep me posted on how they compare to the trxus if you make the change. If they are as good in the snow in our neck of the woods, the Toyo's are a no brainer, even at a $40 per tire premium. I'd also rather not have additional siping if possible - any siping on an MT is an opening for chunking in the rocks despite how much better they handle bad weather when siped.

not sure if i am later or not on supplying info but i run the toyo MT in a 315. i had OME heavies all around. there was surprisingly no rubbing in the rear when i flexed as much as i could.

in the front they would run at th rear of the front wheel well when flexing. if i went into a gas station really fast they wouldl bump and run in this spot. it is this reason that i just went ahead and installed the slee 4".

noise? not bad for an MT but definately not quiet.
offroad? better than any time i have owned int he past, this includes:
bridgestone MTs
bfg ATs
Truxxus MT

in two weeks i am wheeling them pretty hard... i know that doesnt do you a lot but i am sure they will be stellar...

I had the same concern, but became convinced it wasn't an issue. Can't remember why now though I think it was a review I found on goggle and talking to MOJ.

Update:
I have been running the Toyos for 3 years now. I have been to Moab, the Rubicon and the Black Hills besides Colorado.

I have put on a little more than 30K miles and they have held up well. They have been quiet, no major chunking that I have noticed and never let me down in the snow or on the trail. I would recommend them as a great MT Tire. I still probably have another 10K to 15K of usable tread left.

I recently found a used AT Horizon trailer with 33" tires and Jeep Micky Thompson Rims

I would like all the tires on my setup to be 35's running Toyota rims so my one spare can be used on the trailer if needed.

So, I am going to take two of my Toyos and put them on the trailer. I am going to keep a Toyo as a spare and sell the other two.

I am going to replace the four street tires with the Cooper STT's. I could have fliped a coin on these three years ago and now I will be able to have tried both tires. Several in my club have the Coopers and love them. They are much cheaper, plus the rebate helps.

My main curiosity is will I be able to tell the 12 pounds less weight per tire in performance and MPG.

I wont be getting these till next week as they had to be ordered.

Running a Toyo spare with Coopers shouldnt be a problem as the tread is similar and they are close in size

Ill post up my first impressions in a couple of weeks

Thanks for the update. I've read so many bad reviews ('mud) of Toyo's its nice to hear someone liking them.

With that said the price point of the STT's is great in a 315 and am thinking that will be the direction I head when the time comes.

Oh crap! I almost missed a thread to spread the word about how awful Toyo Open Country M/Ts are... They suck. I have not found a situation where they haven't sucked except for I couldn't kill them. All that means is I was stuck with a crappy tire for even longer! If Toyo M/Ts were the last mud tire on earth, I would run A/Ts. I think that about covers it.

DO NOT BUY TOYO OPEN COUNTRY M/Ts!!! YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED...
