Forgot to ask, I understand there are two versions of this topper, one where the bed platform hinges farther forward and another where it hinges a foot or so farther back. I for sure want the version that hinges farther forward. Is that possible? Do you have any more info on this option?

Just got a message back:

I have two options
Both hinge upfront
The difference is the rear access hatch
Option 1 is standard with the small bed section opening to the rear
Option 2 is the small bed section is part of the whole bed flip and only access when the entire bed section is closed

He also said he will send pics and a video which I will share.

Is there an option for the bed to not be a one-piece thing (that reduces the headroom when closed) and instead have it be some sort of folding/extending platform that can be pushed forward (above the driver/passenger are for the most part) leaving MORE headroom that stock in the area rearward from there.?
(I believe this is how some other companies make theirs)

I think you'd have to store the pieces down below, not stacked up above as there is only enough room for the bed frame support and mattress when closed on some of these, even adding thicker bedding makes it harder to close.

Believe this is how Mulgo or some other companies (not Alu-Innovations or Alu-Cab) makes theirs. This would require completely new fabrication and I can only assume incur a larger cost.

I get you are worried about the headroom being removed, but how close are any passengers to the top of the windows?

I want to be able to sit in the back when the top is closed. As it is now, in stock form, there is a max of 48" in height. I'm about 3' "tall" when sitting (butt to the top of my head), so if I sit on a 12" box I'm just about touching the interior roof. Would I survive with only 44"? Of course, but it wouldn't be ideal. Is the trade off worth it...? Maybe.

I don't want to feel like I always have to pop the top to function in the truck - there will be times that a more stealth mode will be called for...

Totally get what you're saying. Unsure of how easily you will be able sit in the back and operate with the top down. This isn't a high roof Sprinter.

This would require something other than an alu-innovations pop top.

Don't think you'll want to cook inside with the top down. You'd be able to maneuver with the top down, but would be hunched down or squatting in the aisle. Then you'd be able to eat in the front two seats.

Most fit outs have a 270 awning fitted to the roofline, and require the rear doors to be open to access the kitchen/cooking.

Awesome, thanks! I watched a video of a guy in Oz who had just got his installed and he was somewhat unhappy with the newer design as it limited headspace when the bed was raised. He was able to make a relatively simple mod to help remedy the issue to a degree. Curious to see the videos to really tell the difference.

They might also do black as a no cost option color. I know they were at one time and it tends to go with the less common troopy colors, ie. what I like to call East Coast Red

This is a great question Juan. I would think the answer here is "it depends".

I do not think it would need replacing anytime soon (say 10 years or more) because you're supposed to use a ton of sealant and the product is then bolted to your vehicle using the roof brackets.

However, there have been some who have removed an old Alu-Cab and replaced the top with a different pop top.

I would think you might only need to reseal the top is if you remove it for some reason or if you have a leak form. I can certainly reach out to Cassiem to confirm.

maybe they stopped offering black because for SA and OZ - their two largest markets by far - black simply absorbs too much heat? Just a thought.

That being said, I personally think a white roof looks great with almost any color land cruiser ... lends a classic vibe.
