ok, some non "epics" first (Onur's word for the day). the new dog fighting for seat space, we saw wild turkeys on the way up, about 15 of them.
at lunch, the forest ranger enforcement showed up. checked tree tags and shot the breeze for a while. he was very nice once he found us to be a group of nice people.

all the kids were sledding at lunch too.
I then let each of the boys steer for me for a while.

ok, here it is! everyone had their trees. as you can see, the snow wasn't too bad, but there was solid ice below and was really slick. we all got turned around and were headed back out. Onur, FZJ80, leading, Kit in the 200 series was 2nd in line, and Josh(eyebmx), and Steve L.(Lurch) were next(both FJ40's). Kit, on a corner, slid off the trail. problem was it was a steep embankment. he rolled right off the trail and was stopped after a complete roll by trees. the 2 40's didn't see it and drove past it. Kent, Brooklynkid, stopped first. those of us at the back heard about it on the radio. Kit is fine, no injuries. then, the recovery started...
note in the second pic. that Kit's truck is below, and the other 80 above it is on the road he rolled off from, about 1 or 2 car lengths behind that 80.

Ashleigh has some decent recovery pics, I'll see what to post tomorrow after others have posted. I'm going to bed. We decided it was too slow going over the mountain to SFe, so turned around and ended up behind Shawn and some of the gang going south at 25 mph. Got to be easy cruising south of Jemez pueblo. We stopped at McDs in Bernalillo to feed the kids and hit the I north. Slowed to about 30 for snow and road conditions at San Felipe and didn't get home until 945; 3 hours after we left La Cueva.

we cut down a few trees to pull the truck out straight back. 2 80's(Onur and John, sl33p3) set up on the side in the outside ditch to pull the 200 down flatter, then Mike set up behind the 200 anchored to a tree and David L's 80. we pulled the truck backward with David steering (yes, it still ran).

Epic! Im really sorry I missed this... Looks like a great day to be in the mountains. Glad everyone made it home and all are ok!

That's way more snow today than the past two years combined.... That's more excitement that what I expected to see, just glad everyone walked away. We were really looking forward to it today, but it just wasn't going to happen with the little man being sick. Looked like a good storm was brewing up there around 5pm or so, at least what I could see from Abq.

Hopefully we'll be out of the hospital and back home by tomorrow afternoon and have another shot on the New Year's run.....

once moving uphill, John re-positioned to beside Mike for a double pull that kept the 200 from sliding sideways and helped Mike's 12k winch do the hard work.
second 2 pics are the damage. hood and windshield in the last one. on the way out Onur ended up driving the 200 because the windshield was very tough to see out of. Jill drove Onur's 80. and it's not over!

I don't have pics of this part. almost out, a H**p was turning around at the bottom of a big hill. Kent was infront of me and the H**p owners dogs ran out in front of him. I saw his brake lights and saw the ice after his sliding tires. I couldn't turn(I tried but too icy and my 40 was going straight) and so hit brakes too, picked up the radio and started calling out, "DON'T STOP, GO, GO!" Jill saw it and started on Onur's horn, steered left and hit brakes. Onur see's it all in the 200 and steered right and hit brakes. the radio HT Kent had, had dead batteries...I rear end him, pushing in the tailgate and punchng a hole in it. Jill and Onur successfully missed us both and didn't get stuck.

didn't think it could get worse did you all?!

fortunately that was the worst it got. Kit called a tow truck , but it couldn't get up to him. He is staying the night at the cabins there in La Cueva. I told him to call tomorrow if he needs help getting home.

Yes, I feel very bad about what occurred today. I'm very happy Kit is ok and not hurt. It could have been worse.

Adrenaline was running through all of us. You could see it in our faces. We were all very much concentrating on getting this rig out of there. We had to get it out.

Lucky, we all have a very good idea of what to do in these situations so we all worked together and got this done. It was tough, cold, wet, and draining but we could not have left the 200 there. If we did, the next chance we'd have at it would have been spring time.

Great job everyone. Seriously. It was a phenomenal team effort.

Ash would have been proud!

:)

I'm proud of you guys. This was a tough situation and everyone worked well and efficiently. The lessons learned from trips like these should not be forgotten; have extra food, clothes, water and each vehicle needs to have their own recovery equipment in case the need arises and you're running short. Plan for the worst, hope for the best. Something we don't think about often is cargo management; getting hit in the head with a flying shackle or a chain saw during a roll over would really make matters worse.

I hope the newbies don't get discouraged from attending these types of trips but preparation is the key as everyone found out!

Nice job y'all. I was under my 80 all day, dropping the tranny for the engine rear main seal r/r.

This group rocks. Great job everybody! Sorry I wasn't there to help. Glad nobody was hurt in the roll or recovery.

Cargo management is something I learned after O'Neill's head on. I keep everything strapped down in the back at all times.

no question it was cool to see how well everyone jumped in immediately and started working together. the whole operation came off without a hitch on the first try. not even really a change in plan. equipment abounded. there was nothing we wish we had while setting up and everyone contributed something, even if it was just a jacket to put over a winch line.

we were all a little sickened at the sight. it was a relief to see Kit jump out and be unhurt though.

Good morning! Kit is in good spirits. The man at the towing company is going to call him this morning with a plan to get the vehicle home. I was worried about Kit, so it was a good feeling to know that you all were with him. Thank you so much for your help and caring. You are a wonderful group of people.

Krecon1, I hope your little boy is doing better and will be home soon.

i have few other before the event pics i'll post up when i've processed and uploaded them.

as for the event, well yes it was, epic. it WAS a PHENOMENAL team effort, everyone kept their head through the whole thing and we had the 200 back up on the road in 2 hours from "hey what is that"... just before dark, and just before it started snowing again. after the initial, "holy crap", all the gears started turning, came up with a plan and split into various teams to execute. onur and i were a winch and anchor/snatch block team to pull him flat and stabilize, mike and david set up for the main pull backwards back up the hill. steve and david plus others were clearing trees for the path then david jumped into the still flopped 200, started it, and we pulled it over flat and kept tension as mikey went to work. had to re position me once i was crossing trees on his way up, the little extra pulling nudge was a bonus and helped to keep him stabilized on side slope. shawn and onur were the maestros of the pullers and it went extremely smoothly. i have no idea how we would have gotten him back up the way he went over, we could if we had to i'm sure, but you couldn't even walk down it, at least 70 degree incline for 10'+ feet.

this is why you spend the money on the crap you hope you will never need, because if you need it, you NEED it. oh yeah and i agree, STRAP IT DOWN. i think if it had been a 40, we could have put a strap on it and tied it on shawns dogs leash and mushed it out... or maybe just tug of war'd it out  but not that big ol 200. thank goodness it was under its own power with david behind the seat and reverse could help a little too, what little traction it had. Mike's winch was stalling getting him up the final part with lots of wire back on the spool, at "12k" capacity, very close to re positioning him farther back on the road for the final part to get more wire off the spool. luckily my little winch could keep things moving, giving a little help. very good we had both of them, and some extra 80's for good anchors too ;P lets get that solenoid replacement in there mikey, it is funny to "tap" on the solenoid box to get it going, just like pulling ash up the wall. :hillbilly:

all in all a very long day, but we got trees and got everyone out, at least to civilization. i was proud to be part of that effort.

oh yeah and that gd jeep was camping. i saw the campfire after we were past, i had a back row seat of those festivities, all i heard was shawn on the radio and then saw taillights clearly not on the road, 3 sets! bailing left, bailing right, very glad we didn't have to do another tug in the dark. that ice under the snow WAS ugly for sure.

initial assessment, that is Kit, the 200 driver standing by the rear wheel shaken and a little stirred, but otherwise ok.

Good work everyone. Sorry Kit.

I felt a little uneasy going yesterday as my gut feeling said to stay home...especially with no roll bar, only lap belts, and wiper assembly pulled out for rebuild.

speaking of equipment, it just occured to me that my strap that was between Mike and David ended up with someone else. if you see it (dirty yellow 20' strap), let me know. thanks.

The truck is just metal, paint, and plastic that can be repaired or replaced. Kit was not physically injured and even managed a smile afterward.

This was Bonnie's first trip with the club and her first off-roading. She was very impressed with the recovery logistics and teamwork. Quite frankly I was skeptical that we could get the truck out because I was looking down from the location where the vehicle rolled. (This picture)

The guys down in the ravine came up with an excellent plan that wasn't obvious to me until they described what they were up to. It worked perfectly after some off-trail 'grooming'. :D

We got a beautiful white fir Christmas tree. (pic will be posted later)
