Well maybe the impeller on your water pump is up the poo somehow.....

Or perhaps your fan and fan-shroud aren't doing the job they're jointly responsible for..

Yeah. Old perished tyres can be dangerous... I discard tyres when they're too old (and are showing signs of perishing) even when they still have plenty of tread left... But it is indeed hard to do because I agree that new ones are so damned dear!

Not much progress, still sitting on jack stands, but here’s an update nonetheless.

Not sure when I’ll get tires, or even what tires I will get when I can afford them…looking at Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs I’ve currently got 3 sets of BFG ATs and one set of MTRs on my vehicles. I want to try some more aggressive AT’s but no need for MT’s for what I do. These days I might 4x4 about twice a year.

I pulled the extra leaves out of the passenger side front leaf springs and put a 'lowering block' in between the top of the spring pack and the axle. It looks level. I jumped up and down on the front bumper to settle things and could hear the clunking noise that I hear when I hit the speed bumps in the parking lot…looks like my front drive-line slip joint is bottoming out. I just had it lengthened, I gave the shop the flange-to-flange measurement and trusted they’d know how long to make it. The front end has a shackle reversal so when the springs compress, the axle moves back. If it were stock, the axle would move forward and the drive line slip joint would travel the other direction.

I ordered an Autometer water temperature gage, haven’t received it yet.

Also got some extended shackles coming for the rear end, about an inch over stock. Hoping they’ll raise the rear end a bit and level it out, plus give me a better shackle angle, current angle is about 12 deg. Pulled the leaking rear shock off, it’s shot. Will be ordering a new set of OME 60064’s or N89’s from Kurt here as soon as I find some extra cash.

Found some ‘new’ jump seats that match the ones I have, so I’ll be pulling the 70 series bench seat out and putting these new long jump seats in for the stock troopy rear seating look.

Put a few tire plugs and some sealant in my tire, just so I could take it out and drive it.

I think it has a blown head gasket; It's still blowing coolant out the overflow, I installed an Autometer temp gauge, it's running up around 220F, way too hot. New t-stat, new water pump, has a shroud, radiator was flushed and checked by a shop.

Coolant is frothy and smells like diesel fuel; coincidence that it blew when I installed the turbo?

Yeah, but not too surprised really. There were hairline cracks in the head in the areas between the valves. It pressure tested fine. Held together pre-turbo fine, the increased pressure & temperature from the turbo must have caused the cracks to open up. It cold be just a head gasket...another symptom is a few puffs of white smoke out the tail pipe when I start it cold.

I haven't pulled it apart yet. I should do it soon, pull the engine and get it into the garage before the weather turns.

I just need to do what I should have done initially, rebuild it and repair/replace the head.

Deja Vu. Cleaned off my work bench and rounded up an engine puller, and engine stand last weekend.

Pulled the engine yesterday.

Got it partially torn down today. Here's a shot of the head and block.

The block is at the machine shop. Getting ready to order parts. Trying to source a oil pump drive gear 15121-56030 and the driven gear 13519-56010 as mine's a bit chewed up.

Thanks, I placed an order with Engines Australia last week. DHL left a tag on my door yesterday, so hopefully I'll have parts on my porch today when I get home.

Amazed at how fast I received the parts from Engines Australia...paid for them on Thursday, DHL attempted delivery the following Monday...air from AU to SLC, Utah, then trucked up to Boise in two business days, 4 calendar days.

For the record: items were 3b head and rebuild kit, weight was 75 Kg (165 lbs) and shipping was $315 AUD ($226 USD).

Machine shop is making progress, liners are in...I just placed an order with cruiserparts for four exhaust valves, Toyota Part 13715-58010, which I hope are the right size, my head is 40.90mm or 41mm, stem dia. 9.0mm, length: 127.70mm...I wish they'd put specs/size on the parts as I don't know the year/make/model this engine came out of for sure.

I've been using JP-carparts to find some of the part numbers. I placed an order to them for the oil pump drive gear and the driven gear last week. The driven gear was in stock, the press-on (crank) drive gear was 'made to order-one week' Got a shipping confirmation yesterday. Anyone else used this source? Seemed pretty reasonable, (if the quality is good) and as these parts are no longer available, not sure what other choice there is other than beg in the wanted section for used parts.

I know, a lot of text and no photos...sorry.

I did buy a pint of paint to test out a color, olive green 637, weather has been poor for outdoor work lately so haven't got a chance to spray any of it. I want to clean up the engine bay and paint it while the engine is out. I might have to borrow a trailer and haul it to a co-workers shop if I want to do that before spring.

So, your telling me that if you order a part from them they will "make" per request? If that is the case I have a few things I need.

That is what their reply was :

They listed a price for the cam and cam timing gear as well, I did not inquire about them as I decided to get my cam machined and reuse the gear, but those are two other 'discontinued' parts that I was unable to find anywhere else.

Wow, that's awesome. I have a couple parts I need that are discontinued, I'm going to give them a try and see if I get the same result.

Thanks.

Gears showed up today...2 days from Japan to my door, $16 USD. Packaged/labeled as OEM.

Tried out the paint I purchased, I suck at painting, it's too cold to paint too. The color, code 637, is too "pukey green" as my son said. Wife said it was "too limey"...I kind of like it, but will probably try a different shade, like 6H9 Grayish Olive.
