Thanks for the pics.
Since Im paying attention now, Ive seen these run BOTH directions. I will, however, be keeping it the way it is (as you had done as well).
I spent a few hours today building a gusset for the rear shackle mount. Nothing too fancy...just like the one I built for the rear essentially and basically like yours with the 2x3 cut on a 90*
Got the spring width set DEAD NUTS at 29.5 in which is what the stock width was.
However, (and I had the same issue with the rear springs as well) when I set the rear hangers and I match them from side to side exactly in the same location, the shackle angle is OFF by 5 deg. Measured the springs theyre the same...I just DONT GET IT.
When I set the rears springs I had the same deal. Only I matched the shackle angle vs. the hanger and it was WAAAAAAY OFF. That is till I just matched the perches and all was right in the world. So Im going the same route in the front.
Havent jacked up the rig yet to see where they will fall. Hopefully tomorrow.
Anyone have any ideas as to why this would occur?
I think Toyota have had some problems while building these rigs and especialy when changing to LHD. They made some creative fixes that you can't allways see but come across when building something different than stock.
I'm guessing no more head case and full speed on the 40?
Oh and did I get it right, you are giving us less qualified welders an internet class?![]()
Im guessing you are right, but I just can not see what the variation would be. the hanger bracket is the same dimension, the springs are the same dimensions, the front hangers are in the location and the reference point that I am measuring off of is the same...its just weird. The only other thing I could think of is that one spring has more wear than the other and is a bit flatter. I did not measure the distance from the ground to the bottom of the spring....Ill do that today.
Im going to guess something like this is what accounts for the MYSTERIOUS cruiser lean.
Yeup. Full speed on the 40.
As far as the internet class. There is far too many bats flying around in my brain to be able to teach anything. Ive got my own VOODOO when Im welding which is why this **** takes me so long.
Just so you know, if you look back at the post...I wasnt the one busting on Rusty's welds. Ive got no room to talk on that topic.
Tell me you got the inners and hubs too.LOL
Thanks for the prop on the welds. I really do appreciate that since I have been self taught.
So I just ordered all my front end jazz...
studs, cones, nuts and overall knuckle re build stuff aaaaaaaand....
30 spline longs!!!!!
Had em in my FJ62 that I bought and installed and then SOLD, so Im hating the fact that I had to buy em again, but theyre worth it.
That was the last MAJOR expense purchase to be made so Im pretty excited about it!

I didn't know that I just ordered the "Set" from Bobby.gotta have the inners to use the 30 spline birfs.![]()
I did that on my truck, no change what so ever from swapping springs side to side.Maybe the springs aren't the same. I mean maybe they have slightly different spring rate? Did you try swapping them?
My '78 has this problem. Cruiser lean...

If you read the factory service bulletin on Cruiser lean (it's been posted here a few times.) It calls for a plate on the corner opposite the low corner to flatten that spring out IIRC it's the front PS spring.

well...matching the length worked in the rear, but in the front it was off by 12* when I put the weight of the rig on the springs. So I tried it with matching the angles...I set em to 20* to allow for spring settle.
You have new springs? Sorry for not being up on the whole 100 pages of this thread.
Once you matched the front shackle angles is the front axle parallel to the rear? Remember how clean you are as you ponder this question.
I ordered a pair of these from Proffitt's today and I picked up my front axle from the shipper. You'd better hurry. I'm catching up.

can't get enough of your build, you've motivated me and I believe many others, thanks. I know I'm a rookie, newbie, know nothing piece of **** but...... been thinkin about the situation your having with your front shackle angles and all, maybe you could check and see if your perches are set on the same plane. if they are out even a 1/2º or so it could possibly make a difference.
