Yeah...that outrigger things gonna go. ill just build my own.

BTW, are those front spring hangers right, or do I have em reversed?

I think they're reversed. I would guess the ramp is supposed to ramp you up over stuff. They would work that way, of course, if you want the axle that far forward.

The hangers I'm using are the same as rusty_tlc's. I wish they were longer. I'm probably going to cut a gusset that will weld from the back and one side of that bracket further back on the frame and over to the saginaw plate.

The outriggers are for full-width axles. Dump 'em.

Theyer gone.
You could just buy the hanger from ruff stuff you know. Just a thought. All the s*** you sell at the swap meets, youve gotta have BUCKETS of CASH laying around.:flipoff2:

I love me some spring over.

Hands DOWN the single BEST mod to do to these rigs IMO.
That and of course lockers. Opens up a WHOLE NEW WORLD of wheeling performance.:steer::bounce::steer::bounce2:

I've been trying to keep focused, but a Paki top and OEM bows jumped up in front of me yesterday and I couldn't avoid them; $850.

If I decide not to go through the frame, I may order some steel bits from Ruffstuff.

Yes Sir!!

Soooooo glad I did it to Fiona, it was like a new truck after.

Those springs are stickin RIGHT OUT THERE!?

Depends. If you want the axle as far forward as possible (and I think you do), then they are fine, if you don't, then you can flip them around.

I would leave them as is. They might hit occasionally, but so what. The shackle reversal that MORE puts out for the YJ Wrangler looks like that and I never saw anyone that was running it have a problem with it (Rubicon, Fordyce, Moab, etc.) Don't forget once you build a bumper, they won't look so exposed or look like they are facing the wrong way.

Looks the same as mine if you don't count my bird s*** welds.

That is a good point about the bumper protection. I forgot about that.

You never drove an FJ40 with front drum brakes, IMHO front disk brakes is the best mod ever for the FJ40

I've hit more than one ledge with mine, no problems so far.

gussets

Chicago

Im loving this thread. I have a 68 fj40 with fj60 axles and SOA that im building. Im following this thread closely for my build. As far as the rear shackle gussets for the front springs, shouldnt they be turned like ewheelers on post#1164?

Not sure but just a thought.

Getting the front mocked up.
Got this MASSIVE outboarding gusset from Ruff stuff when I ordered the soa kit....not too sure about it either. May take it away.

I would just trim the ruffstuff outboarding platform to the width that you need.

Your front hanger looks right.

Thanks for the pics.
Since Im paying attention now, Ive seen these run BOTH directions. I will, however, be keeping it the way it is (as you had done as well).
I spent a few hours today building a gusset for the rear shackle mount. Nothing too fancy...just like the one I built for the rear essentially and basically like yours with the 2x3 cut on a 90*
Got the spring width set DEAD NUTS at 29.5 in which is what the stock width was.
However, (and I had the same issue with the rear springs as well) when I set the rear hangers and I match them from side to side exactly in the same location, the shackle angle is OFF by 5 deg. Measured the springs theyre the same...I just DONT GET IT.
When I set the rears springs I had the same deal. Only I matched the shackle angle vs. the hanger and it was WAAAAAAY OFF. That is till I just matched the perches and all was right in the world. So Im going the same route in the front.
Havent jacked up the rig yet to see where they will fall. Hopefully tomorrow.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this would occur?

Honestly, I didnt think that it mattered.
Im not 100% sure how he did it, but I put the long side facing toward the front of the rig. Reason...Dont really have one.:D:doh:
