Car Car Nut talks about 80s (3 Viewers)

And it was a much happier time when I had that super clean one. I went by his shop the other day to show him my new 07 120 series, one owner from California. I never went anywhere in my 80 as I'd planned, but driving from northern California back home to illinois was the best choice I've made since getting into these vehicles. Still miss my featured 80. I'll always have that video to look back on. And the Mudder on here who bought it!
Your old 80 is still going strong Aaron. My wife thinks I should replace the hood and get the repairs painted but the way it is has grown on me. The dull fender with the paint pen junkyard id# kind of reminds me of Cindy Crawford's beauty mark. :) Glad to hear you've got another truck to enjoy - Our family has been having fun with this one!

Is he correct when it comes to LCs every time? Nope. But no one is. Is he doing things his way? Yup. And he don’t give a fũck because he’s bringing in hundreds of thousands of viewers and, to a certain degree, does a very good job of educating a lay Toyota owner. This is a good thing.

Kudos to him for understanding how to make money and support many mouths. I give him many credits for that.

Do I agree with his videos? When it come to things like LCs and Toyota part system understanding, I think he does an acceptable job— he’s a general Toyota mechanic; not a specialist in Toyota Land Cruisers.

I’m sure he is picking vehicles to work on and video based on the algorithm feedback/YT analytics; ergo, he’s going to make mistakes and will not be specialist knowledgeable on every vehicle and topic.

This dude is from the Middle East: he knows how to hustle, work hard and make money. 😂😂
 
Ya he's working two jobs. He has a work ethic that most people lack these days.
There's a videos of him and his wife starting the shop and his philosophy behind running it. Very interesting IMO.

I've not found any other YTer that does better hybrid videos. We're in both camps now (old/new) and he's a good resource for both.

OTRAMM is miles better. I heard OTRAMM replaces the bible in hotels with the FSM whenever he travels, to spread the word... 😜

Hot Take, if you forget a major part putting a hub back together, you are not doing it right. Plus, he takes what I call "mechanic shortcuts," and neglects to document important steps to his audience.

I am sure the Car Care Nut works hard, but I personally wouldn't use his videos as instructional videos, IMHO. Entertainment: Yes. Instructional: No.

FSM is the ultimate resource but there is an Aussie video on rebuilding the front knuckle I was impressed with. The aussie guy has done it many times with the harshest conditions in mind. It is that kind of real experience I look for when I need more than what the FSM has to offer.

100% and most things in life generally. The resources available to us nowadays online is immense and as long as you have the willingness to learn plus the tools and patience required almost anything anyone can do.

I would never have contemplated doing the HG on my 80 series when i had to but studied everything and successfully did it after buying a WS Manual, and that was the 1st time i'd ever done one.

last weekend a torsion spring on my garage door broke and i couldnt get my 80 out, bugger as it was a long weekend but is what it is. The garage door Co quoted close to $1k AU to come out and replace them but I ended up doing the job myself and the springs cost me less than $150AU and they were genuine springs. Their quote stated $550 just for the springs.......
Did you go with Dobinson or king springs? Any pictures before and after? How much lift did they add?
 
We aren't the right audience for the video at all, we already own 80s and can judge his opinion against our own... The video is for people considering buying one, that haven't formed an opinion on what ownership is like. Is it accurate, I dunno maybe everything changes when you've found a method of caring for your old stuff that works for you, but people that haven't had a lot of vehicles to keep up on might be overwhelmed and spend out the ass for a guy like TCCN to repair/maintain.

haha...that is why I only watched one of his videos, the knuckle rebuild video that was linked in this subforum, and it was filled with so many errors, I was like WTF?

I do find him boring as well, but he has a >1 million subscribers, so there are people who are entertained by him. It just isn't my thing...😉

I've watched a fair amount of his stuff. It reminds me of my 37 years in parts operations.
 
That's where people are going wrong with his videos; it's from an operational perspective. He runs a business that has to balance labor and costs while making the customer happy. And of course every customer has a different standard, but I think his labor and part rates weed out guys shopping around for the cheapest brake job on a Camry. I think he refers to an FSM and grabs a torque wrench more than your average mechanic, but there's still little details here and there that wouldn't satisfy a hobbyist mechanic just due to the constraints of the operation.
 
Run the 80 up a pass in 2nd gear and 4k rpms and it does alright, at least up to 6-7k in elevation.

Most people baby their 80’s and drive in the slow lane.

Mine liked the 4500rpm action towing a trailer up Grant's Pass. It's a good engine for beating on... and frankly in stock form it forces you to beat it to keep at a pace where you aren't a road hazard because it makes barely 200hp haha.

I have had mine in the dyno, 115hp to the wheels if I recall correctly. 😑

That sounds right after all the drivetrain loss. My 1st gen tacoma made 142hp to the wheels before I turbocharged it though, and now it makes 405hp and 482lb of torque at the wheels. I'm hopeful the 1FZ-FE makes power as easily as the 5VZ-FE when I get around to it.

I've only watched in full a couple of TCCN videos. Seems to me that almost all of his offerings are discussions of the pros and cons of vehicles, not "how to" for repairs. The subject of this thread is a perfect example. So yeah, looking him up for how to fix something on my LC wouldn't even occur to me.
OTRAMM is an excellent resource for that!
 
We just listened to his video in the shop while working. My guy Chris says half way through, oh Ian is getting triggered!!

He is right on about 80 to maybe 90% of what he says in the video. The rest, meh. 🫤
