Can you Turbo a 3FE?

So at WOT do the O2 sensors have anything to do with the fuel metering or do they not try and trim the fuel delivery when the MAF sees WOT?

This might be a good solution to my slow 62 problems.....

Don't know for sure, but I do know that playing with the fuel pressue before I added the turbo definately had a positive effect. I increased the pressure about 10psi and felt a definate improvement. Might be a relatively inexpensive upgrade if sombody wanted to experiment with different pressures.

BOV

Blow Off Valve is on. It's a Mitsubishi all metal unit thats been laying in the garage for some time. I have it dumping to atmosphere right now and have not noticed any

adverse effects.

Alot of difference between a one-off and a bolt on production kit. I don't have enough time on my hands for that kind of project.

on a 96 with OBDII, when the MAF is saturated the O2 sensors drop off and report 0.00. So basically the ECM sees an increase in RPMs but not in air flow when this happens.


I'm not sure how that correlates to this setup but I'd assume it is similar.

You might think about just offering a startup kit, manifold and down pipe. That's the hard stuff to put together without good fab skills. The rest has a lot of support out there.

That's a very nice setup! I really like the simplicity of the front mount. Looks like a perfect inexpensive solution for my 91 LC. It just needs a bit more poop. I Like the wrinkle finish piping. Good Job! -andy

That Intercooler looks a lot like an Eclipse side mount. Those can be had for a good price too.

If you look closely, you can see the only "connection" in the pic. Simply run a vacume/boost line to the barb on top of the BOV. The inlet (bottom) of the BOV gets plumbed into the charge pipe. If you decide to run it like a "recirculation valve", pipe the exit end of the BOV into your intake track between the air flow meter and the turbo.

Thanks .. I got it .. I look close and see the hose that come from the turbo ( pre intercooler :? )

I thought I will place mine post intercooler in the throtle body or close .. and vent it to the air.

I agree with Landtank about possibly producing some startup kits - I think you would sell a bunch of them! Fabricating the manifold and downpipe is difficult and beyond the ability of most of us . Definitely beyond my skills. Dyno the thing and keep us posted.

Dont know how I missed this thread, but it sure makes one think that turbo'ing a 3FE is way easier than once thought. This is also making me think that my V8 idea might get pushed back in my head again.

It seems you dont have the time/want to go into production with the turbo manifold and downpipe, but if anyone who does have the time or wants to do this could get ahold of his originals and copy them, it would definatly get you somewhere.

If you can weld, the manifold is not nearly as daunting as you might think. I just used weld els, or "short radius bends" from an industrial pipe supply outfit. The flange actually has a fastner welded to it so it can bolt to the cast manifold before ever spot welding anything. This way you can get the turbo placement where you want it and then just fill in the pieces.
The flanges that bolt to the cast manifold are actually from the factory downpipes

What exactly is the parts list for this? And isn't the turbo off the Turbo 4cyl Mustang the same thing?

Turbo is the same thing but the one I used is the IHI. From recent information I've gathered, the IHI was the smallest avilable on those cars. Even smaller than the 48/60 Garrett on the automatics. I think it's perfect for our low rpm engine.

How did you adjust the fuel pressure before you turbo'd it, was this with the FMU, or is it possible to adjust the pressure without it?
