Definately some stuff to think about. Wish I had known....but like other TLC owners.....I was suckered in by the love of the bezel :)

Best things start with "B" you know that right? Beer, Baseball, Boobies, Bezels, uh yeah, boobies and bezels!!! :)

Great write-up!!

Greg,
Nice to see your information that I used on you when I purchased the 81 from you is being shared here.
Still haven't fixed the e-brake issue as yet though.

I think I'd buy that red one in a heart beat...sad but true...getting there is half the fun :wrench::steer:

Trekker did a fantastic job on that Cruiser...I actually saved those photos

It's kinda hard to P.O. bash when my Dad was the P.O. who bought it new. What few things that are wrong with my 40 are just courses of nature.( mild rear sill rusting and some rear quarter panel rusting) everything else is factory. I guess I am very lucky that I got one that stayed in the family since new.

Want to buy a Land Cruiser need advice

I am in the market for a used Land Cruiser. At a local Acura Dealer they have a 2002 LC with 132k on it. I was just going in for learning purposes (to drive one, since I never had) and this ride is sweet! However, the miles have me a littel worried. They are asking 13,990 (great price?? too good??), it has had two owners and seems to have had all maintenance at Toyota dealers. What should I look for ? The Serpentine belt was replaced but I can't find the timing belt replacement. Shouldn't this have been done by now? The car is in pristine condition, but I am worried that after 132k I will be replacing/repairing parts. Does anyone have any info on this year? or have one with this many miles on it? I want to go into this with my eyes open. I was hoping for a used with 80k- does the extra 50 make that much of a diffrence?

I'm going to go ahead and give this a little bump. Great work, Could have used this 2 years ago but it doesn't really matter, would have bought it either way! Very reassuring to know that other people are in the same boat!

I bought mine based on 5 pics and a 10 minute conversation, 2000 miles away.

one pic, one phone call, one plane ticket

Bump for great info.

Unfortunately in the last couple weeks ive had the experience that im not allowed the time to do this. I recently had the keys in hand and was inspecting a 40 for less than ten minutes before others would call in and fight to put in a non refundable deposit. They made me give the keys back haha. I finally found one but i had to go with my gut a little bit bc there were too many people offering. Im gonna use this list now though that the sale is done.

I know this is an ancient thread, but...
Is there a good thread extolling the virtues and vices of each FJ40 year out there?
In looking for my first, am having a hard time deciding what to narrow down to, hearing that the older models are solid steel vs recycled (which rust faster),
Later models have been improved with more bells/whistles (but get more expensive in the 80s)
Non-smogged vs smogged based on year...
Help!?

FJ40 Buyers Guide

It's not a complete info list but it helps.

If you are like me no matter how good of one you find you will always have envious cheating eyes for every other beautiful FJ40 out there no matter the year. I'd get used to that if I were you.

No problem FWaltersnewbie, I've got the perfect solution for you! Just buy mine. :) Where in MD are you? My 40 series and I used to live in Baltimore!
