Got a pretty kinky bend in the passenger rear lower control arm while cruising around Kelly flats this afternoon.

I've got a trip planned for this weekend. Planning to get some 2"x1/4" DOM tube to cut and sleeve both arms tomorrow.

Cut off the old joints from the bent control arm. They fit into a 1.5" ID tube pretty well. So I got some 2x1.5x0.25wall DOM and just ended up replacing the tube. This should be strong enough for anything I'm gonna do to them. I hope.

While attempting to break the send barrier today the semi float rear axle decided it had enough. Gonna try to source a fzj80 full float to swap in this week.

Maybe tons in the future...

Any updates on this build? How is it holding up?
Hey sorry it’s been a while since I’ve been on here.

The driveline has been doing great!

Still need to add some more heat shielding for the cats. Also didn’t have much luck soldering together AC lines so I need to source some 100 series and 80 series lines to creat a set. The other thing I’m planning is to move the motor up 1” and back 1”. The AC compressor plumbing connections are very close to the power steering box.

I’ve been having some intense death wobble. So I recently rebushed the front control arms. Seems to be better but it’s only been a few days. The only thing left in the front end that isn’t less than a year old is the PS box. I’ve got a spare. I could swap.

Thanks for the quick reply! I am thinking of doing this swap within the next year or so. Trying to figure out how feasible it would be to swap a H151 trans behind the 2UZ, or if I should just stick with the auto. How difficult was the wiring? Ive heard its a nightmare.

Honestly the wiring was the most technically challenging part of the swap, but if you can read an EWD or are at least willing to struggle through it with some assistance it’s not that bad. The signals for the most part have the same names between the 80 and 100. All that being said it’s not a small block Chevy swap

Switching to a manual would be nice, but the a750f is a great and smooth shifting transmission. Way better than a440 or 442. If you’ve got an a750f I’d run it otherwise manual might be a better move.

I’m not sure about bolting up the h151 as far as bolting them up. Might need a custom bellhousing and flywheel. I’m not sure

Will the A750F work behind a non-VVTi engine?

Little update.

After two years or so on my 2uz swap I was having some issues with the thing starting reliably. I had convinced myself it was MAF harness related. Although there were mostly zero fault codes. This morning I got a p2799 - ecu immobilizer fault. I immediately dig into my Russian immobilizer hack in the ecu. I found a cracked solder joint. I reflowed it and strain relieved the wiring. Put it back in and fired right up.

Also, I added a rear winch - a warn m12000.

It's been a few years since you've updated, how's the drivetrain doing? I am considering this same swap for my 97 FZJ80. It just seems logical, especially since I have the same drivetrain in my 03 4Runner and am extremely familiar with the engine.

I think my main concern right now is the ECU. The link for the Russian guy doesn't work anymore. Any thoughts there?

It definitely has been a while. The drivetrain has been great, I haven’t been using it too much lately. Had kids.

If I had all of the original equipment to use the proper immobilizer stuff with the factory ecu I’d just do that and stuff it under the dash some where and use the steering column ignition switch for control. Does that make sense? There’s a guy I worked with a bit on rising sun “stuckinthe80s” who did it this way. Probably a more robust solution honestly

Sweet. So I really should have a donor vehicle. I'm thinking I'll just straight up swap in the steering column/wheel. Looking at an 05 Sequoia rn, but stalk shifter. I know I can probably convert it to a console shifter.

Either way, this seems easier than trying to make a LS swap work. I don't really have any real issues with the 1FZ other than being slow as sin.

I'm not too far away from you (Bailey), hopefully I can use you as a resource once I take this on! Thanks so far!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. I’ve been working on the cruiser a bunch lately getting it ready for a big trip this summer. So far I’ve completed the following:
  1. Front sway bar bushings
  2. Rear sway bar bushings
  3. Rear transfer case output shaft seal
  4. Replaced right rear brake line which got snagged by a tire chain a few years ago.
  5. Torqued up the steering knuckle bolts and pitman arm nut (this was surprisingly loose)
I’ve noticed a few places where the harness got a little scorched. Worst is the transfer case harness which I’m going through now and rewiring. I’ll try to keep this more updated as I go through this process and get ready for the trip.

Hoping to drive this thing a bit this spring to get some time on it to give it a bit of a shakedown.

I’ve been doing a bit of pretty high end wiring lately at work. So I’ve decided to rip the wiring bandaid off on the cruiser while debugging the tcase issues.

The current list of tasks for wiring:
  1. The wire I used is already cracking in the insulation, so I’ll be replacing that with some nicer stuff.
  2. Redo the wire loom where I used chinese finger trap style loom.
  3. A lot of the wiring I did was crimp splicing to pig tails I got from the junk yard. I’m hoping to find the pins that I did that on and do a better job terminating those wires (fewer but crimps). And use Raychems where appropriate.
  4. Debug and repair tcase electronics operation
  5. Hook up reverse light to a250f reverse switch
  6. Evap system controls
  7. Maybe cruise control if I can get the VSS sensor wired in

I’ve been getting a bit further into the wiring. My goal now is to clean up the interface between the new and old wiring so that there is a single connector I can use to disconnect the engine from the chassis harness. Originally it was a mess of random connectors and direct wire interconnect.

Here are a couple photos of the status of the wiring.

Here are a couple tables of the pinouts for ih2 and ih1 in the 91 fj80

And a provisional interface mapping (still need to figure out the transmission gear lights for the combination meter)
