Bolt on turbo kit (5 Viewers)

OK guys! We are getting to the point we are going to be putting in orders for all the small parts. I really need a list of people who are pretty serious about a turbo kit at around the $4000-4500 price range. Remember this is the base kit with all the parts needed to bolt the turbo to the truck. Including all the extra little things like ceramic coating, up spec'd AN lines, anodized/hard coated aluminum bits, caps for lines for the CA folks that need to take the kit off for inspection, etc.

The parts are still all the same as I laid out earlier.

Borg Warner CNC turbo
Tial Wastegate
Stainless j-pipe
AN lines and fittings
Bolt on oil drain fitting
Flanged downpipe with AFR bung
etc

The Intercooler setup is on hold just to see how many Turbo kits actually sell before shelling out the costs associated with setting it up. But if enough kits sell it is an easy thing to setup the intercoolers.

So I have started a list and will move it to the first post. Please let me know if you are serious so the shop can start buying all the associated parts and customizing them.

Badass Turbo owners list:
1. HDJdreams
2. ThomasMore66 - ?
3. SteelHunterFJ80
4. Heckraiser
5. DCGuillroy
6. Snowglobe
7. Bucketman

I was thinking hard about it at $3K but I'm out at $4,000-4,500.
Sorry. :(

Yeah I was hoping for a little less, but once you start adding in premium quality materials, like 304 series stainless versus 400 series, good braided AN lines instead of cheap stuff, brand name accessories, high quality turbo, ceramic coating, etc. It just adds up. I didn't want to come up with cheap stuff just to meet the price point, it would have been another product like whats out there. But this is bolt on, completely reversible, etc.

Sign me up!

Put me down. I clearly think the unit needs an intercooler, and I’m not fully commuting until we see results. Still playing the v8 vs boosted 1fz game in my mind. 1fz could have some modern control and lose that egr setup.

I'm in. I would like to know what kind of numbers are we gaining and how hard it wound be to upgrade later with stand alone engine management, intercooler etc or what other stages there might be. At this price point, we are close to a supercharger (not that I think it's better).

Also it's important for us one  mechanics to have well written installation instructions!

Woot! I still need to allocate funds, I'll shuffle around the bank accounts and check back in. Totally fine with setting up my own intercooler as I've already got some ideas. Can your builder give my wife a "no exhaust leak" guarantee? ;)

Please let this be real. In like Flynn.

I'd say my price ceiling is $5K if it can deliver reliable 100+ ft/lbs (@ crank) and I'm still a serious buyer. But probably not on the initial wave of kits.

I'm figuring $10K for a full engine rebuild on top of the turbo kit.

After that a LS swap has more advantages.

If I hadn't just picked up a supercharger I would be in. Thank you Ryan. Can't wait to see how this works, as it's coming from a reliable source.

Kudos

The plan is certainly to have an intercooler. But this is to assess how many people are actually interested. As you can imagine the shop is going to try and order all the parts, have them laser etched, get hoses made, etc. SO they need to know how many people will actually buy before they order thousands of dollars worth of parts.

Well like I mentioned the gains will be about what you make with the TRD SC, maybe just a touch more, but we are kind of limited by the ECU. We should be able to make a little more power up top than the SC since the truck goes so rich.

Going stand alone, etc is not terrible but it is considerable. The actual stand alone is only about 4-6 wires to splice, but the tuning is the issue. It is not even on the table unless this kit sells well.

Intercooler is still in the works but the plan is to sell some of these kits now that it is winter and use those funds to do the intercooler kits.

Haha the plan is certainly no exhaust leaks. The builder is quite particular, and is well known for producing a high quality product. They will be welded up in a jig, etc.

I'm in Ryan. Does the shop want any $$ up front? And just to clarify- Would this initial kit come with the intercooler or would that need to be purchased in the future? If in the future, then do you have an approximate cost? I'm sorry if the question is redundant. I know the plan from the beginning was to have an intercooler, but I can't tell 100% from the posts above and I hate surprises when it comes to this sort of thing.

Hey man, the shop is going to try and do maybe 1 pre-sale at a reduced price of $500 off, but I do not think they will be asking anyone else for any money up front. And this is where I am going to have to get them to finally step in and come to the plate. I am not getting/receiving any money so I can't speak to the entirety of the plan.

Please hang in there for a little longer, I am sure it seems really odd that the shop hasn't come in and mentioned anything but I think they were very hesitant to get started and didn't want to have any kind of pressure to meet a deadline, etc.

We are still really working on the intercooler, the Bell cooler I wanted to use is going to be much more cost prohibitive than we hoped. They really up-charge when you have them build the end tanks so it might be the case of buying the cores and having the tanks bent up, but again please put yourself in a shop's shoes you have to put out all the development costs and parts costs without any certainty as to the market for 80 series turbos. Not that there are ever guarantees but traditionally the 80 series crowd has been fairly conservative with mods and money.

I'm game for a pre-sale if that is an option. Anything I can do to help!

I don't think it is strange that the shop hasn't posted on this thread. I completely understand the desire to be anonymous until they are ready to start taking orders. They have a great go-between with you and don't have to deal with the phone calls- because you know as well as I do that even if they post with the request that nobody call and bother them, they would still get calls.

I totally understand where the shop is coming from with building this kit and not knowing how many they are going to sell. There is a significant risk of losing $$ both on the R&D end and with too much product sitting on the shelf. There is a fine line one has to walk to make a profit with this type of endeavor. You have to order enough of the components to get the price low enough to sell, and then hope you can sell enough completed units to make your money back and some profit to boot. I deal with this sort of thing often- sometimes waiting years to turn a profit. Sometimes you have to have a little faith and a bit of luck ;). Hopefully we can get enough committed buyers to make the shop comfortable enough to take this project to completion. That was one reason I was asking about $$ up front. It is one thing to say "Yeah, I'm interested" and another to actually put up some cash and commit, especially when you are talking $4-5K!

MUD members are notorious for wanting more for less, but lately it seems like there is a little more money being spent. Unlike an interior lighting upgrade or new cupholder, this mod won't be for the faint of heart or light of wallet. I'm already in deep, so what's another few grand .

Thanks again for your work on this project. I am 100% sure it would not be happening without you.

I'm in
Lets go!
Come on everyone and just do it.

Just catching back up. Is the plan to build one first and see how it’s all working out, or is it a multi run deal out the gate? Sorry, I’m a little more in the conservative, wait and see camp.
