I have searched for info regarding this but everything points to replacing body mounts during a frame off restoration project. I am not at that point yet as I am driving this daily and won't be doing the resto for another year or more. I have a significant amount of sway when cornering and upon inspection see that a few of the mounts are in a deteriorated state.

My intention is to replace my body mounts without removing the entire cabin/tub etc. Is this possible and if so is there a systematic process to minimize aggravation? (start at back to front/side to side?) I ran across an obscure post of someone stating that they had done it and it was a PITA.

So I am summoning the wise ones of the forum as to what your thoughts on this are. Thanks!

It is not very difficult to replace the body mounts without removing the body, especially if you have help. Loosen the body mount bolts on one side and then remove the body mount bolts on the other side and front and rear. Jack up the body on the side the bolts have been removed with jacks and appropriate lengths of 4x4. Jack only high enough to remove and replace the body mounts. I found that the most difficult mounts to replace were the rear mounts. Getting the bolts installed was a pain.

I cannot picture the body mounts causing sway, they are very thin. You might just need to tighten them down, maybe they are loose. If this is a daily driver and you need to keep it a daily driver spray some pb blaster on each bolt of the body mounts and repeat each day for a few days. If while trying to remove these bolts you run into some serious frozen bolts and turning then finds some serious compromised body mounts you could be stuck in the garage for a while.

Get under the rig and have someone try and lift each side of the vehicle while looking at the mounts to see if you can see any reason for the sway, you could have much bigger problems then that thin piece of rubber.

Great info from all. As always your wisdom exceeds my expectations. I do have a few mounts that have deteriorated to the point that they no longer exist (rubber is gone) and I think their the culprits that are causing the grunting , thumping when I got around sharp corners? Does that sound plausible. In any event, many are looking very weary and cracked so I ordered a replacement set. I've also ordered new shackle bushings as they are looking pretty weary as well.

thank you all!

Good. How do your shock mounts look, and how old are your shocks?

I just replaced my shocks about 2 weeks ago so I'm pretty sure they're not the problem. I did however check this weekend to ensure they were tight....so no problem there. The mounts themselves seem to be okay from my inspection as well. This weekend I also replaced the seals between the top and where it meets the tub. They were pretty brittle and dry and that seemed to have solved some (20%ish ) of the clunking but more to do.

I've read that the shackle bushings can be the culprit as well so I ordered them this weekend as well. Eventually I'll replace enough dried out old stuff that it should go away ;)

Hi All:

Duke, you just need to drive that '40 up here to Seattle we can take a better look at its condition! ;)

Of course, one look at my rig might make you turn and head back south! :D

Regards,

Alan
