I’m curious if anyone has experienced a rear main seal rupture after a rebuild? It had about 50 miles on it. Nothing was found on the back of the flywheel that would cause damage. The engine pressures were running about 80. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Install error? Latent manufacturing defect? My guess the lip 'rolled' during install and the rest was inevitable.

There shouldn't be enough crankcase pressure to 'blow' a rear main seal out. And there are other places for pressure to go first - like out the dip stick tube.

Was the seal dry when installed and then sat for a while to get good and stuck to the seal surface?

Are you 100% confident it was not damaged during installation?

Never even heard of a ruptured rear main seal before.

80 is VERY high for oil pressure on an F/2F. Perhaps your regulator is not working properly. If that’s the case, your oil galley plugs could be compromised too.

I don’t see anything in the F engine repair manual wrt whether this seal is lubricated first or not prior to install. It does say that bearing caps are to be lubricated before torquing. Any more info?

You would never install a seal like this without first lubricating the surface exposed to the rotating part.

It’s kind of a 101 thing.

Ah, a 20db kind of thing.

Stick a new one in (lubed ) and see how it does. It isnt hard to replace......once the tranny is out :)

I just replaced the RMS in my 62. It was so old that it was spinning around in the housing!
