The 5 banger!
Really keen to see how you go with this. For entertainment and also education!
Haven't seen many here in Aus
(except a bunch that the govt. bought for some sort of National Geological Survey in the early 90's)
I nearly bought a MWB PZJ73 back in 2011 and for some reason the gearbox felt alot nicer than all the other machines I had driven at the time.
I just couldn't come up with the $10,000 in time to purchase it.
What was your main reason going with a PZ conversion?
Did you have other contenders as well? (1kz/1hz etc)
I'm interested in others thought process when considering engine conversions.
(I don't really feel like sinking thousands into my 3F....)
It was, as
@sark mentioned, an almost free engine.
After my 3B blew up, I found this power plant for a great price. And it was a factory motor placed in my body; ergo, with little mods I could easily adapt it to work in my BJ70-MR.
The transmission behind this was the venerable R151F; but I bought a new H55F from my friend Kurt
@cruiseroutfit (33030-60850) and a new mechanical BF1A and it was easily game-on to transplant this power train into the 70.
It will not be fast; it’s not Land Speeder;
It’s a Toyota Land Cruiser…. it will not be anything exciting but it will be a factory set-up, and if you know anything about me, I’m 100% OEM Toyota Motor Corporation all the time for my world, for better or worse.
System integration is important for me; When you pop the bonnet and see the engine it will look like it’s supposed to be there, coming off the assembly at the Araco Yoshiwara plant assembly line number 1 between the years of 01/1990-12/1994.
Everything I need for its servicing is available from Toyota.
Another kicker, as stated earlier in this thread (if you haven’t read through it), is that it was basically a low-to-no mile 1PZ acquired from the mining surplus industry. I believe it might have been used as a test engine or possibly as training engine for mechanics.
In any event, after almost 4 years with no Land Cruiser as an available vehicle for me to drive, I feel as though I’m getting close to getting this rig back on the road. And, for kicks to the guy, I do run a Land Cruiser shop for a living.

This truck fũcks…. I’ve had incredible adventures in this truck for the past ten years all around the US. I want to continue its life and I want to transition it to a more suitable worldview for extended life. It’s going to end up as simple camping rig and a bike carrying rig.
It’s going to put a smile on my face every time I put the key in and turn. There will be no bling to this truck. It willbe a simple implement to allow me to have fun with my friends and traverse this great nation.
