I have the ddx6019. I bought it a year and a half ago.

I loaded the topo USA maps that Garmin distributes. I'll post a pic tonight.

Here's a couple screenshots of the Topo maps:

I have an Alpine W505 with a Blackbird II in my car, but right now I'm living in Mexico, so I want the maps from all Mexico, can I get the maps from garmin or navteq for my Alpine Blackbird II??
Thanks.

WOW. Looks like the kenwood nav units w/garmin WILL work with my custom topo maps?? I'll still need to check for sure, but if that's the case - i'm adding the 8120 to my xmas list----TOO cool!!

Hi everyone,
please excuse my ignorance, but I know next to nothing about GPS units and I'm interested in the kenwood nav HU's: being able to upload topo maps means it's also possible to upload custom garmin-compatible driving (routable) maps? Thanks.

Can you switch between Topo and Streets or did you just replace the streets data with the topo data?

Yes, it's easy to switch between different maps. You go into settings and you can enable or disable the various maps you've loaded. I had to figure a lot of this stuff out on my own because the documentation provided by Kenwood/Garmin is really lacking.

I don't think it's possible to upload routes you may have created in mapsource. At least that's the case with my unit. You can create routes and enter them directly into the unit though.

You can however, create custom "points of interest" files and upload those. I do that before a lot of trips I go on. Before taking a trip, I'll find the relevant gps coordinates on line or by using google maps, create the file and upload it to the gps.

Thanks for the info Im going in on the 8120 I have a had a hole in the dash for over a year now, I cant think of anything I could possibly need above this unit it has 5volt out too, :D
I will be hooking it up to some rockford amp and sub and whatever I can fit in the front doors preferably mb quarts., for once I feel like my patience has paid off,,,,,,,,,,sweeet

Oh, you've just answered all my questions. I've been looking for the right unit for weeks. The Kenwood with Garmin looks perfect.

My requirements list:

Bluetooth
HD Radio
Navigation
SD Card
CD/DVD

I've been using a suction cup to mount my Garmin 60csx, this is much better.

AllenTent- Go for the mb quarts in the doors, although pricy they sound incredible, you'll be very happy. But try to avoid the best buy rockford fosgate subs i had that exact setup and was not happy with the sub at all, I switched to a pioneer premier sub last year and it is louder deeper and sounded better. changing nothing but the sub. (ported box, 500w from amp)

I already have a rockford 10" punch sub I have had it for a long time I bought it once for another install which never happend, I have heard the mb quarts they are my favouritem not sure of the mount depth, but I figured I should have a nice system by the time Im done

Supercamera, can you create a route while you drive it? I guess if you can't load a route, will it make one while your driving it and save it for future use?

Also does anybody know if the Kenwood will allow for control of XM, Crutchfield specs say Sirius.

I'd appreciate it if you could post the model number of your MB Quart speakers and pics of your install. I haven't seen any on the spec sheets that look like they will drop in without spacers.

I have the Pioneer avic-z1 it is great. My buddy hacked it so I or my wife can input an address, and change route while driving.

allentent- if you already have the sub then of course put it to good use. they are by no means a bad sub, miles ahead of sony explod's or something similar. With a ten inch sub and some mb quarts your system will sound awesome. I know that you'll be very pleased.

d97fzj80-I would happily post picks of the install but it might be a bit be bit bland... my mb quarts are 6x9s in boxes. i often put the speakers on the roof of the truck when camping or partying. (scares away the wildlife) so i needed them to be portable. my post might have been misleading. i have mb quarts in boxes and stock speakers that are not hooked up in the doors. side by side the 6x9s and the 5"(is that what fits in our doors?) sound very similar. I worked at future shop in the mobile audio department for a while and everyone there loved the quarts. best of luck with the install.

I will start a thread when I get the HU, no sound for over a year I am dead keen now ,I have a friend in the car sound bus who is a genious with panels etc, but I would choose to do the simplest install, I am quite an audiophile and have some serious home equipment , the mb quarts have the sound im after, well see what it takes to fit them, Im not looking to overcomplicate when it comes to the cruiser, function first I will way it up

I've never done this but I remember reading in the manual that you can create a route while driving.

I have been digging into the Kenwood/Garmin topo map thing as well. I like the DNX5120 unit better than the 8120 mostly because its got a rotary volume knob (and its a lot cheaper.) I contacted Garmin to ask if I could load Topo onto the 5120 through a card reader plugged into the USB port. They say no, won't work with the 7120 either. The only unit that can read the SD cards is the 8120. WTF? I'm really not into the motorized face plate either. I talked to Gary W, who has the DNX7100, which I guess is discontinued at the moment. It has the SD slot and can read the Topo maps as well.

I'd really like an in dash GPS soulution but I also like being able to download a track from the GPS to a computer to be save it. Many of the 4x4 trails here are unlabled and creating your own map comes in handy. Do any of the in dash units actually connect to a computer? That seems like the most flexible solution.
