I didn't use to like the idea of a center console. I thought they were ugly, bulky, and not period-correct. But daily driving my 73 fj40 got me thinking about some creature comforts.

My doors don't lock, and neither does my glove box. I'd like somewhere that I can leave semi-valuable things while the rig is parked. Not to mention, I could really use a some cup holders.

Again, I don't want anything large and invasive. If I have to smash my seat cushions to fit it in, I just won't install it.

What center consoles do y'all use? Any good brands you recommend? I believe CCOT has a couple different styles, and I think CruiserCrap has one too. Please let me know!

Thanks in advance for your input.

I have a Tuffy console, no complaints whatsoever.

I have a 73 with bucket seats and a Tuffy Console. I absolutely love the console and it is very well made. It almost looks factory if you didn't know better. It fits well without taking up too much space. The only thing the 73's OEM console was really good for was looking OEM because it wasn't good for much else. Having a real cup holder is just a added bonus which never hurts.

Good to know, thanks! Where did you get the console? And does "Tuffy" only have the one model?

I actually don't remember where I got my Tuffy console from now it has been over a decade now. Tuffy consoles are sold by many different sites online. I would just shop for the best price that I could find. I have the Series II Security Console but there is a model available for your stereo like @bsilva132 posted. Tuffy actually makes several different types of lockable containers specifically for the FJ40.

There are at least 2 different widths. I have the 8" and it is tight between my aftermarket bucket seats. I got mine cheap so I made the 8" one work for me. Still need to heat and bent the shift cane on my SM420 as it just barely hits the console when I put it in reverse.

Cruiser Crap’s console here. I’ve been very happy with it.

And the envy of every Land Cruiser, it has cup holders.

I threw this junk together out of some scrap. Both compartments are lockable and I can fit a pair of my size 12 shoes (standard console measuring units) in the large one with room to spare. Theres a change bin and 2 cup holders at the front.

Cup holders, yes! My one gripe (and probably unavoidable) about those are that the driver’s side front cup holder conflicts with a shift to second gear if you have a normal size cup in it. Not necessarily a design flaw as I still have 3 to choose from, and everything is about as adjustable/universal as it can be - just something to be aware of. It’s a small cab and everything is a tight squeeze! I could bend the shifter man to accommodate but I rarely have passengers, so I just use the passenger side cup holder.

I think @Solace in Solitude made a cool one out of an ammo can if I recall...
