Hey guys, 2000 lx470, alternator gave up yhe ghost on me. Looking to find a replacement but it is harder than i thought from the average parts store, can anyone point me in the correct direction of what i need to get? Alot of what i see is remanufactured denso's etc. Yes i know mine is rebuildable but i would rather go new because of the extreme mileage on my hundy, 374k. All suggestions welcome!

Most mudders would never do this in 1000 Land Cruiser years but I have Autozone alternators in two of my hundys and doing fine so far after a year or so. Just sayin.

I did the 100amp Denso from NAPA recently and have been very happy with it thusfar. Well under $200.

Check these guys out. Same price as Factory Toyota roughly and has Nippondenso internals, just like Factory. Nice power.

Why not OEM reman? Might as well do valve cover gaskets while you are in there.

@Workhorse how much did that set you back? Im not sure I have the time to wait for something to get ordered in as my 100 is my DD, but im very interested in a stronger alternator for adding electrical accessories down the road.
@BadReligion Lol my valve cover gaskets are a mess too and are on the list, howd ya know? Ive thought about OEM reman but can i get one from like an advanced or O'Rielly's or do i need to go through dealer?
The NAPA denso may be my best bet if i can get my hands on one, going to start taking apart tonight after work, soaked bolts in liquid wrench last night to hopefully give some ease to this

Is OE+ at the parts stores mean OEM reman?

OE+, OEM, OEM reman, etc. are all free style words these days. They have no clear cut definitions. People say whatever they think will sell product. You have to do the research.

I had a feeling that at 374k it was probably due for its first (or second) VC gasket. Get the spark plug tube gaskets too...and if you are due for the T's and associated hoses, again its easy access. PM is a slippery slope.

For sourcing the OEM reman, any of the online Toyota parts dealers can get that shipped to you. As much fun as I had replacing my starter, I dont want to do that again for another 200k mi and felt better going with OEM reman, which again may be different from a Napa Denso reman.

I have had this high output alternator for +3 years and it hasn't given me any trouble.

I would love to know the behind the scenes of who makes what, is it the same quality, etc. Is Denso from NAPA the same thing as from Toyota? Is it like the 555 joint just in a Duralast box?

For certain things, I buy from the dealer - starter, alt, plugs, etc. May be overpaying for something I can get at Autozone for half, but peace of mind too.

I haven't bought one (yet) but their sales guy/guru Tony was helpful and explained the model differences and helped me to understand what model might suit me best. Their lead time was short (few weeks IIRC) and the price was the same as Factory new, roughly $600-ish but about 100A at idle depending on the model you buy. I have had my eye on one for my 80 with HDFT but haven't looked for my gasser 100. I wouldn't get one for my UZ as I plan to convert my 2UZ into an HDFTE. I'd add one when my FTE engine is getting prepped to install into my 100. I have heard rave reviews like @KillerBox reinforces about M2K.

Update:
Went down to Chatham Parkway Lexus in Savannah yesterday and picked up new alternator, taking the core with me, 269 out the door.
The replacement was not hard at all, no need for removing rad or coolant lines, a little tight yes but not enough to warrant the extra work I think. Only extra thing I did was loosen up powersteering pump and slid out a bit for removal and replacement. For those with higher mileage and haven't seen what your plug in looks like for back of alt. Just go ahead and use flat head screw driver to light push and press out. I tried with my hands and ended up breaking some of the dry rotted plastic, luckily i got it back in on the new one with no problems.
Day 1 with new one running, 90 degrees, AC full blast, Stereo cranked, battery meter stayed solid @ 14 on way to work
This alternator also came with 12 month or 12k mile warranty from dealer also. Anyone going the alternator replacement route, id definitely recommend getting from dealer instead of parts store.

I certainly understand what you are saying there. If I only used my 100 on pavement, I would be much more likely to test some of these other component suppliers. Unfortunately, AAA won't tow me from most of the places that I get to so I will go with what I know works.

Easier to find a Tundra or Sequoia alternator at stores. They also have more amperage, 130/150amp. I put a Tundra one in 6yrs ago, just had to use the Sequoia/Tundra connector (Part #90980-11964), if need splices the part #82998-12440.

Yeah I would just do this. Also I believe the 2nd gen Tundra towing alternator is even better. Has higher amperage. Although I forget how much more than the normal 1st Gen Tundra.

Okay checked the amps for the 2nd gen Tundra towing alternator. It's also 150 amps. So that is perfect. 50 more amps that standard.

But again you will need to get a correct connector.
