Anyway to make a cover for the gear shifter? I imagine it could contour over the shifter and bolt together on the sides. There is currently no fix for worn leather here and the only other repair would be to buy an entire new shifter assembly. I see AJT makes them for other models but not 1998 LC

I’d be a big fan of open source sharing if I didn’t want to pay for something too.
Not to be a jerk but the guy is running a side business that he put time into. Kind of crappy to hit him up for “open sourcing”.

You want him to hand over his IP, time, labor, and equity in his business?

You can see his designs. He posts pictures. If you'd like to reverse engineer them, I'm sure nobody would object. If you're looking to copy and paste his designs and circumvent what he's done, already a great benefit to the community, you're being silly.

It is an interesting idea! With plastic? Plastic usually is not good for grip. Most shifter covers are made with over-molding, a rough plastic or rubber over rigid plastic. Can you post some more info? Thanks.

Whoa there. Please don't make more of my comment about sharing designs than it is. It's totally ok to keep his designs to himself. I think it's great work so I said I'd love it if he shares some.

I didn't ask him to share everything he ever makes, however the entire reason that he's able to make those prints is thanks to many, many people who shared their time and work.

Sharing information is the entire purpose of a discussion forum.
This forum is running on open source code that is given away in exactly the fashion that you've just questioned (or laughed at)
That phone in your pocket? It's got open source on it. The web browser you're using? yup.
The 3d printer he's making awesome parts on? I guarantee it's running on open source.

Anyhow, there's a very large community behind open source 3d printing, and it's all about sharing.

So no, I'm not being asinine and asking for free stuff.
I was encouraging someone who's talented to share some of their work with the same community that enabled him to create it in the first place.

I am a huge fan of open source too. I learned CAD modeling in university (Mechanical Enhineering, OSU), from basic software use to advanced modeling techniques. But none of these is related to product design. I teach my self by checking people’s solid models and observing products. Many car manufacturers in US buy Mercedes and tear down the whole car for “learning”.
But open source is not all about sharing. It is more about contributions. People contribute to desired features and make the program or cad model towards perfection.
We can start a project, we list features we want and we can work on the model together.

Don’t take me serious. I wanted to ask Toyota to open source all the blueprints and cad models of 100 series.

Dude, that's a lot of verbiage to basically say "You didn't build that" and then justify why it's fair to request something of someone like this. That's how communists think.

Maybe it's the entrepreneur in me, but it seems a pretty audacious proposition and basis.

True...but I don’t love the vinyl look and the overdrive button install is really not that simple. This is an issue that could be solved in 5 mins with a good 3D cover and the current fix takes at minimum 1.5hrs if you’re good with a lot of small parts that could break or get lost along the way.
