While waiting for my engine bay paint to fully dry, I pulled the battery tray off the shelf to refurbish. Never looked at it closely but I’m thinking wow this has no real rust. On closer look I noticed it’s completely covered in some sort of plastic which is starting to break off.

Is this original? If so, isn’t it kind of funny that the folks at Toyota were like…listen guys we have to do something about preventing rust on these battery trays. Forget about the rest of the car but this battery tray can not rust out this time.

Jokes aside, I’m tearing off all the plastic. What do y’all recommend spraying / coating it with? I was thinking raptor liner…but I don’t think things through like you guys, would that be a mistake? Or maybe plastic dip it?

Can of spray rubber like the guy that advertises spraying a screen door and uses it as a surf board.

Pretty sure they came painted from the factory without any additional coating. Of course that doesn't mean you can't coat it yourself. Obviously just make sure there isn't any rust lurking underneath first.

The 4 55’s I’ve had were a rubber dip

lol I was completely off base on that comment. Was just researching coating options. Going to powder coat first and then coat the inside of the tray. I wonder how that plasti-dip spray would work? I also need a plastic coating for a lot of the welded on wire ties. Thinking the regular can of plasti-dip might also work for those, assuming I can get them into position to actually dip.

I have a new OEM tray that defintely has a rubber coating applied.

I don't believe that would be durable enough for what you are doing, I'm guessing some sort of polyurea coating is what you want.
Probably find one of those home bed liner kits would work best for the DIY battery box coating.
I've used U-POL Products with good success on other projects.

I think you're right. I noticed later that Plasti Dip advertises itself as being peelable; so not a good candidate. Wouldn't want a textured finish though but I think that's the right track.

You can control the amount of texture on the U-POL product I linked or mask the bottom and just coat the surface under the battery.

Again my first choice would be a polyurea coating but I'm not familiar with any DIY kits. I did try to coat the entire inside of my Pig with polyurea but it was a huge PITA.
I didn't spend much time looking but this site looked to have some info.

Raptor makes a 1K liner in an aerosol can which leaves a very light texture, and can be picked up from local parts stores.

Of course this post wouldn’t be complete without me showing an example.
IIRC used one thick coat on my battery tray. Zoom in and you can see how light the texture is. If it’s anything like the much older and much cheesier Dupli-Color TBL in an aerosol can, it will never wear off as long as it’s not exposed to UV light.
