I think it's time for me to change the primary/starting battery from the DHP to something else...still trying to decide on which batt.....!!

i'm needing 1 or 2 new batteries after a winch install too... I love all the info that is here about batteries but it just makes my head hurt when i try to decide what brand to go with :D...

I had good luck with the Advance golds in my 60 so i might just go with them again, but i do know an Interstate dealer... :hmm:

Yeah, and all the DHP 31M failures don't give me any comfort. It sounds like it's just that battery though. Maybe I'll try a regular DHP in the smaller size

I, too, am not convinced the charging system in the LC80/100 is 100% compatible with AGM batteries. My AGM's are on multi-stage chargers designed for AGM batteries.

I replaced my 7 year old Interstate Megatron 27F starting battery with another Interstate Megatron 27F. Fits perfect =)

My Kirkland brand battery from costco has been going strong for 5.5 years. The other day it needed a jump so I'll likely need to replace it. It looks like the new costco batteries are made by interstate.

Yeah I'm a little torn. I'm working on my dual battery setup and want to run a deep cycle battery as the main and use the battery I have now as the secondary. But I definitely don't want to spend $200 on a battery that will be dead in 18 months. That's unacceptable.

Either the system is not compatible or people are not doing a good job setting up dual battery systems.

I am not sure I'm going to be sticking with my current Odyssey AGM's either--less than a year and they are just plain old sucking.

I am probably just planning on going to back to the Toyota batteries.

:meh:

You're new Odyssey is failing already? That's disappointing indeed.

Onur, is it possible to get factory Panasonic batteries here in the U.S.? They seem to be bad ass.

I assume the answer is no.

FWIW, we've had reasonably good luck with Optima Yellow Tops.
There's a 27F version waiting to go into the LX next Wednesday.

A lot of the Optima grief seems to swirl around their Red Top.

Correct.

I have an IBS Dual Battery system setup exactly how the instructions told me to set them up.

I also went and bought an AGM specific charger and even after charging till 100% within a week, they are close to being dead.

Very poor $500+ investment.

Wow that really blows. What other regular batteries are folks using, aside from Die Hard, Optima or Odyssey? Seems like these will be nothing but bad news in an 80.

I'll be using the Hell Roaring unit if it matters.

I've thought maybe temperature to be the silent killer of these batteries.

Odyssey states the operating temperature of their batteries:
-40°C (-40°F) to 45°C (113°F)

It definitely gets over 113°F in the engine compartment, even with the heat shields in the 80.

Odyssey does offer most of the batteries with a metal jacket. And the operating temperature of those:
-40°C (-40°F) to 80°C (176°F)

And our engines definitely get hotter than 176 in there....

Interesting point Les.

I have been running my PC1200 metal cased pair of batteries for several years now on my 92 3fe engine - no issues...

Well, I checked out some batts yesterday. It's a toss up between the Costco Kirkland group 24F and Interstate Megatron group 27F. Can't get myself to go into Walmart if I can help it. Costco has a killer replacement policy, can't recall exactly, maybe three years+prorate? My local Interstate has 2.5 years free replacement + usual prorate.

I may go to the local interstate dealer and see if I can find a no labeled interstate 27F battery for less coin.

Wow, glad I checked this thread. I've had an IBS system sitting in a box for a year or two. I finally ordered a wiper reservoir relo bracket and battery tray from Slee yesterday and was going to buy an Odyssey this week. Now I'm not so sure.

Interesting on the yellow tops. I had one in my 4Runner and could start, winch, and run my fridge with no problem. It ran dead several times when the truck sat but was fine after a quick charge. I replaced the Toyota battery in my 80 with a DHP last spring before driving to CO/UT. It's been solid as a starting battery but it won't run my fridge for sh!t. I thought a deep cycle AGM was the way to go, but maybe I need to consider another yellow top.

I'm curious, which fridge do you have? If it's a smart unit with a CPU then I can see it being voltage picky. On the other hand, my dumb engel with a knob and no cpu will keep running until the batt goes dead. My second fridge is a Waeco unit and it too is very voltage picky.

I have an Edgestar with a low voltage cut-off. It's just funny, in my 4Runner I could run the fridge for a weekend in 60-80 degree temps off the yellow top. The compressor kicks off after a few hours in my 80 with the DHP.

I went to the local Batteries+ last weekend with the intent of buying an Odyssey. For some reason they couldn't find them in their computer :hmm: and kept pointing me to their house brand AGM which had a 5 year warranty. Maybe a local dealer with a kick @ss warranty is the way to go...
