Ok I just bought me a 72 fj40... its great and fun and all.. Including rescueing the cluth cover plate off highway 41. But one problem I'm having (didn't happen when I test drove it or even yesterday) but today I have the horrible loud hissing sound. I found out its coming from well just let the pic explains it. I think the hose should go back into the carbeurator somewhere from what I've seen. Anyways I got oil spewing and steam everywhere out of the guetto breather filter and well I'm at a stand still.

I do'nt have the original carb so I'm stuck with this... but I sound like a jerk riding down the road :)

I bought it from a mr. fix it... I'm sure you guys know how it goes.

The hose attached to the PCV valve needs centered manifold vacuum.
Looks like you have it connected into the air cleaner which is incorrect.

Ok so .. heres another one. This may make more sense so you guys can see the routing.

The hose that runs right behind the oil fill cap is the one for the PCV. it should run into the base or if a stock Toyota carb below the carb. Your's looks like it is attached to the air cleaner which is wrong. It should be under a vacuum all the time. It pulls any bypass gases into the cylinders to be burned off. Thats why the other hose should be in a vacuum. With a stock air cleaner there would be a port for that hose.

heres a better angle

I'm a newb if you guys haven't already figured it out :) Please go easy. I just don't want my motor to implode! :)

PCV Connection.....

If the intake manifold doesn't have a PCV vacuum port provision (I don't see one) a insulator block (in the pic below) will be needed..........

PCV valve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/269299-crankcase-breather-filter.html

You need vacuum in the crankcase and fresh air in the valve cover

The PCV valve down on the side of your motor vents if it gets pressurized into the manifold and the hose to the valve cover routes fresh air into the valve cover to replace what is vented

if air is coming out the hose to the valve cover you have probably got a clogged or capped pcv or you have a lot of bypass ---rings blowing by but if you are not smoking or anything then prolly just a simple pcv change

The breather is ok but better from the air cleaner---with a good pcv the oil and hissing should go away

x 3 on the vacuum from the manifold for the pcv---that on it's own may do the trick

long time ago cars used to run with a breather on the crankcase in place of the pcv and just drip the oil mist

number 21 is the PCV valve--note the hose runs to the plate at the base of the carb not ported vacuum (above the carb butterfly plates)

What's this long time ago? My FJ25 still does this today. It has a small slit in the valve cover for makeup air. You won't know it was there if you weren't looking for it. Pretty cool how they did it. Just not as good as the PCV that started in 1961 with the FJ40.

My bad

Hey quit Living in the Past:p:p:p:lol::lol:---couldnt resist that but---

-Long time ago is relative term I guess

yeah the PCV is one of the first pollution devices and it actually benefits by doing a better job of scavenging pressure from the case with vacuum rather than let it vent" did fine beforehand with just the vent---and a slit as I just learned:)

Sorry to get off subject here but ... so what are your guys recommendations? just a hose reroute or buy a stock carb...??

These webber things are expensive and I know they wouldn't make something like this and have a tea pot boiling water coming down the road! :P

PCV

Well, I would recommend checking the PCV for operation and not installed wrong way round and make sure the PCV hose is routed to manifold vacuum

Since you dont have a hook up for the valve cover inlet on your air cleaner I would leave it as is and change the filter.

If you have no method of manifold vacuum maybe two breathers as a temp fix until you can sort it out---a crankcase breather is better than an inop PCV valve

The PCV needs to route to the bottom plate on your Weber (front driver's side). If there isn't a fitting remove the plug and have autozone give you a brass hose fitting. Without the PCV properly vented you'll overpressurize the crankcase. Don't ask me how I know. The valve cover is routed to the bottom of the air cleaner. I have the same setup, let me know if you need better pictures.

Good looking engine, Pat. Now change that fan.

X3, and get the correct width belt, even if it takes changing the alternator pulley

Above shows the PCV hooked up to the base of the Weber 32/36. The valve cover breather is attached to the thru fitting on the air cleaner.

Plastic elbow that draws off the valve cover pressure/fumes.

PCV on side cover. If this isn't vented to manifold pressure you'll blow oil out your weakest seal. On mine it was the front seal. It cured itself after I got a new PCV.

that sure is a purty engine!

Nice Engine --I like the header wrap around the 2 pipes, nice job---does it slip ever?

Weatherm---you all sorted out now? Those pics are pretty good eh?

Like said you don't really want to be driving it like that

The parts are cheap---get the right PCV valve though or at least one for a near sized engine. Once you have the parts you are looking at 10-20 minutes maybe and you will be good to go.

Yep they helped out. My friend 'local cruiser guru' is coming over Thurs and we are going to do the old swicher'ro I'll post pics up shortly after. I'm slowly knocking out rust.. taking out old ghetto mounted speakers and what not first while I wait.

After I do this I got a oil pan gasket replacement and I should be good to go... Then I'll work on the cosmetics.
